About Us

"The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated." - William James

Have you said Thank-You today?  Has someone said Thank-You to you today? Everyone craves recognition and praise.

One of the easiest, quickest and most impactful ways of showing appreciation - at work and at home - is through expressing gratitude.  Gratitude has the power to change just about every aspect of life.  Gratitude rewires the brain to see and process the world differently.  Hearing the words "Thank-You," almost instantly results in a rise of feelings of happiness.

Are you ready to take the Gratitude Challenge?  We challenge you to spread the Power of Thanks.  Over the next 30 days, set a goal to express your gratitude and thanks - specifically, outwardly and sincerely - to at least one person every day, either at work or in your personal life.  You never know when your words of appreciation will make a person's day. It requires very little effort and yet it makes you feel good knowing that you've brightened someone's outlook with something so simple.

You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

We are sad to say goodbye to Linda Coglianese.  Linda recently resigned from her position as Intake Coordinator.  Linda started with the agency in 2008.  For six years, Linda has played an integral role at TCFS, handling all of our agency referrals and matching their needs to clinicians.  She is a team player, remains positive during the most challenging situations, and always has a smile on her face. She will be making a bit of switch in work settings and will be exploring the world of health care at a Rush- Copley Family Medical Practice in Aurora.  We will miss Linda tremendously, but wish her the best of luck with her new career.

We are delighted to welcome Hannah Russe as our new Mental Health Worker.  Hannah received her Masters in Social Work in May 2014 from Aurora University.  Hannah was previously an intern for Presence Health, where she conducted social history and assessments with newly admitted clients.  From October 2008 to May 2014, she also worked at the Office of University Advancement in Aurora where she helped develop and implement successful events for alumni relations and the Celebrating Arts and Ideas Series.

 Friends Updates

Adopt-a-Family for Christmas!

The Friends of TriCity Family Services are leading the Christmas Adopt-a-Family program for our client families in need again this year.  For many families we serve, it is a year-round struggle to provide meals for their loved ones.

Last year, the program helped over 70 families at Christmas. Every year the number of families who sign up for these programs increases.

For this program, we are currently seeking sponsors to be matched with families in need.  Sign up to sponsor a family this season and we will provide you with the gender and ages of all family members and ask you to put together a food basket, complete with non-perishable food, and seasonal items.   Sponsors will also receive a gift wish list from their family.  We are always grateful to our sponsors for their generosity and support of this special holiday program.

If you would like to help in another way, we are also collecting donated gift cards from grocery stores and gas cards to be used for this program.

To sign up to help a family this holiday season, please email Mary Kay Dowling at mkdowling@tricityfamilyservices.org or call 630-232-1070.

We would be extremely grateful for your help! Thank you!

 Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Article

The Power of Thanks: Gratitude in the Workplace

According to a Gallup Poll of 4 million employees across all industries, 65% percent of people in the U.S. reported that they do not receive any praise or recognition in the workplace on a regular basis.  This study found that employees who do receive regular recognition and praise: increase their individual productivity and engagement; are more likely to stay with their organization; receive higher loyalty and satisfaction scores from customers; and have better safety records and fewer accidents on the job.  In fact, it is such a critical piece of job satisfaction that in a 2012 U.S. Department of Labor study, a lack of appreciation was identified as the #1 reason why people in the United States choose to leave their jobs.

When gratitude is practiced in the workplace relationships are transformed, complaints are minimized, and satisfaction levels skyrocket.  This effect is profound and long lasting because, essentially, gratitude rewires the brain to see and process the world differently.

Thousands of studies demonstrate that happiness is one of the major predictors of success in the workplace.  For example, one study found that happy employees are 31% more productive than negative, stressed or neutral employees.  Another study found that practicing gratitude on a daily basis reduces stress hormones by 23%.

So how exactly can you practice gratitude in the workplace?  Here are some tips:

  • Start small.  Did a co-worker smile at you today?  Reciprocate.  Did you have mostly green lights during your commute to work? Give thanks.
  • Along with the words "Thank-You," make sure you state specifically what it is you are thankful for.
  • Don't delay your thanks.  Gratitude should be communicated as soon as possible after the action that you are thankful for occurs.
  • Be sincere and genuine when sharing thanks.  People are highly perceptive to insincere feedback.
  • Be creative.  Gratitude can be delivered in different ways: a voice mail message, an email, a text, a note.
  • Face-to-face expressions of gratitude are especially appreciated as they strengthen the connection between giver and receiver.  For greater contributions don't forget the value of public statements of thanks during a staff meeting or in an internal employee newsletter.
  • Make sure you are sharing gratitude with everyone, not just a select few.
  • Spread gratitude and a lighter perspective by providing spontaneous acts of appreciation in your workplace. Unexpected, good-natured humor is a great way to perk people up. Share a funny knock-knock joke you've heard, leave a candy bar on someone's desk or stick a smiley post-it note on a co-worker's jacket where they are bound to see it when getting ready to leave for the day.
