Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Alcohol and Substance Abuse in the Workplace

  • 75% of drug abusers in America are employed ... 65% of them full-time.
  • 15% of all employees admitted to drinking alcohol or using an illicit drug right before coming in to work or during the work shift, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the workday, or coming in to work with a hangover, at least once over the past year.
  • 60% of substance users will attempt to sell drugs to co-workers in the workplace.
  • The average employee takes 10 non-Holiday days off per year (vacation, sick, personal).  The employee who is abusing alcohol or drugs takes 30.
  • The cost of alcohol and substance abuse as it relates to the workplace is $129 billion dollars nationally per year.  This is due to lost productivity, absenteeism, tardiness, on-the-job accidents, liability & litigation costs, increased health insurance costs.

One of the best ways an organization can prevent, detect, and deal with substance abusers in the workplace is to have a comprehensive Drug-Free Workplace Program in place.  TCFS EAP
can be an invaluable resource for organizations interested in implementing a new, or improving an existing, Drug-Free Workplace Program.

We provide: organizational consultation on how to establish such a program (including policy development and last chance agreement process); coaching on the most effective approaches to confronting and addressing an employee who is suspected of alcohol or drug use; empowering the workforce to understand the dangers and impact of substance use through employee education and clinical assessment, short term counseling & treatment referral if needed; and, training of supervisors, managers and leadership on recognizing, identifying and dealing with substance abusers in the workplace.  Interested in learning more about how TCFS EAP can strengthen your organization's Drug Free Workplace Program?

Please call (630) 232-1070 to speak to Laura Kowalski, Sr. Clinician/Consultant and EAP Coordinator, or Kathy Gibson, Sr. EAP Consultant.  Additional information can be found atwww.tricityfamilyservices.org.

About Us

During this month, we at TriCity Family Services ask you to join us as we recognize September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

"Substance use and mental health issues (i.e., "behavioral health issues") affect millions of adolescents and adults in the United States. Behavioral health problems, particularly depression, contribute to the burden of disease worldwide.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) supports preventing behavioral health problems and finding the pathway to recovery for those with behavioral health conditions.

SAMHSA's message is that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover. Recovery support is one of the strategic initiatives identified by SAMHSA to improve the nation's behavioral health, reduce the burden of substance use disorders and mental illness in the United States, and help those with behavioral health conditions reclaim their lives.

The data below from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides a recent look at behavioral health in the United States."

  • In 2013, about 1 in 10 adolescents (10.7 percent) had a major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year. Among adolescents with MDE, 38.1 percent received treatment or counseling for depression in the past year.

  • In 2013, nearly 1 in 5 adults aged 18 or older (18.5 percent) had a mental illness (i.e., "any mental illness," or AMI) in the past year; 4.2 percent had a serious mental illness (SMI); and 3.9 percent had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year.

  • In 2013, 1.4 percent of adolescents had co-occurring MDE and substance use disorder (SUD); 3.2 percent of adults had co-occurring AMI and SUD; and 1.0 percent of adults had co-occurring SMI and SUD.

 Friends Update

2014 Judy Burgess Award Recipient & Fashion Show Update:

Hallie Hudson (Dev. Associate), Kristin Behmer (Friends President), and Lori Georgeson (2014 Judy Burgess award recipient) at the Fall Fashion Show.

Congratulations to Lori Georgeson for being the recent recipient of the 2014 Judy Burgess Award for Outstanding Volunteerism.  Lori was presented with the award at the Friends Fall Fashion Show event on Thursday, Sept. 11th.

Lori is a vivacious volunteer, and undoubtedly talented in so many aspects, but we would be remiss if we did not mention her unwavering grace and patience when it comes to planning events.  Even in dealing with the most challenging situations in event planning, her confident, calm and positive demeanor exemplifies the meaning of "grace under pressure."

In both 2013 and 2014, Lori has spearheaded our Annual Benefit and Auction, raising a combined total of $280,000.   With this Event Chair's leadership and managerial skills, we were able to turn the Annual Benefit into an extraordinary gala event that is recognized throughout the TriCity community. From organizing the onslaught of auction baskets in the basement of TCFS (or the basement of her house), to diligently overseeing event decorations, she ensured that no detail was overlooked.

The Fashion Show was a wonderful evening filled with fashion, food, and Friends.   We would like to thank Anne Stephans, Fashion Show Chair, for her diligence in executing a successful event that netted over $1,800.  The event was held at the Lincoln Inn, Batavia, and had 100 people in attendance.  Jeans and a Cute Top Shop, St. Charles presented the latest in vogue fashions.

Important Meeting Dates:

General Friends Meeting: Wed., Oct. 15th at 1pm.  Meetings are held at TriCity Family Services (1120 Randall Ct., Geneva, IL 60134.)   All are welcome to attend.

 Friends Updates (cont.)

Please Consider Adopting a Family for Thanksgiving

The Friends of TriCity Family Services are sponsoring the Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family program for our client families in need again this year.  For many families we serve, it is a year-round struggle to provide meals for their loved ones.

Sign up to sponsor a family and we will provide you with the gender and ages of all family members and ask you to put together a food basket, complete with non-perishable food and seasonal items.

If you would like to help in another way, we are also collecting donated gift cards from grocery stores to be used for this program.

To sign up to help a family, please email Mary Kay Dowling, or call 630-232-1070.

Thank you for your support, generosity and consideration!

"Backpacks Go to Good Use"

Article taken from the Chicago Tribune, Written By Community Contributor jknaak

Rex Zimmerman, Lori Linkimer, TCFS rep Miranda Barfuss and Stacy Tucker are surrounded by the new, fully loaded backpacks that Berkshire Hathaway Starck Real Estate donated to TriCity Family Services for families in need.

Every parent knows how costly it is to get kids ready for a new school year. Recently the Berkshire Hathaway Starck Real Estate office in St. Charles helped reduce that cost for local families in need in conjunction with TriCity Family Services.

With lists in hand of required supplies for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, the Berkshire Hathaway Starck sales associates filled 60 backpacks. These were presented to Miranda Barfuss, Development Manager of TriCity Family Services, on August 13, just in time for the new school year.

"This is our fourth year volunteering to bring school supplies to TriCity for distribution," said Managing Broker Lori Linkimer. "We wanted to beat last year's donation of 23 backpacks-and look what we did! I am so proud of everyone."

The success of the school supply drive came from the combined generosity of the Brokers, their friends and neighbors, staff members, and professionals who serve the office.  Berkshire Hathaway Starck Real Estate is located at 1350 E. Main Street in St. Charles.
