TCFS Celebrates 25 Years of the WCP
Community Corner

Throughout the month of July, we, at TriCity Family Services have been promoting and encouraging wellness efforts among our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) client organizations in recognition of Workplace Wellness Month.  To practice what we preach, we have scheduled a variety of wellness events and opportunities for our own employees at TCFS to help promote the importance of healthy choices and behaviors while at work.

  • We are having weekly walk times at both office locations - a brisk 20 minute walk around the office neighborhood, scheduled during lunchtime on different days of the week to allow employees who work varying days/times to participate.

  • To promote Movement in our Workplace at the agency, we are encouraging a "Sit for 60, Move for 3" attitude.  This means that for every 60 minutes that our employees sit - whether it be a meeting, a clinical session, or just at their desk/computer - they are being encouraged to move for 3 minutes.

  • Pat Heun, part-time receptionist, presented a Movement Awareness Workshop to TCFS employees.  Pat works as a fitness instructor for Batavia Park District, and she shared many valuable tips and strategies for incorporating more fitness into our daily lives.

  • Greg Watson LCSW, ACSW, LMFT, Sr. Clinician/Consultant, and Sheri O'Brien LCPC, Sr. Clinician/Consultant, recently co-presented a Calming the Mind and Body Workshop to the staff where they taught a variety of mindfulness and relaxation exercises.

  • At the beginning of the week, TCFS staff brought healthy toppings and veggies to create a signature salad pile-on lunch complete with a "green" smoothie with 16 healthy ingredients.

Although July is coming to a close, it doesn't mean that workplace wellness has to end.  On behalf of TriCity Family Services, we encourage you to also promote a culture of wellness in the workplace year round.  By remaining healthy and active, your workplace will reap beneficial rewards such as increased productivity and decreased absenteeism.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Educational Article

If you are a manager or business owner you may be wondering how to engage your employees in wellness initiatives.  Here are some low-cost incentive ideas to begin your wellness plan...
  • Buddy System-Try to build your program around team or partner participation.  When there is group accountability, employees feel a sense of commitment to something bigger than themselves.  Plus, it's often just more fun to share the wellness journey with others.
  • Achievement Awards - Everyone needs verbal praise and a pat on the back.  But in addition, a colorful certificate to congratulate an employee for reaching a wellness goal can be fun to receive.
  • Public Recognition - Announce progress made halfway through or at the conclusion of a workplace wellness campaign.  Focus not as much on those who attain the "most" (for ex, the most steps taken), but on those who have been making the most significant behavior changes.
  • Food - Food is an incentive for many - just make sure it's healthy.  Offer healthy snacks during the wellness activity or host a celebratory luncheon once employee participation has reached a certain level.
  • Gift Certificates - Make it healthy; a simple $5 certificate to a frozen yogurt spot or $10 to a local farmer's market is appreciated by employees.
  • Dress-Down Day - If your workplace follows a business dress code, offer a Dress Down Day (jeans).
  • Time Off - Whether it's a full day off, a half-day or even just a two-hour early Friday release, for many employees this can be even more motivating than money.
Ready for the next step? Form a workplace wellness committee & use the following links for additional information.
