There is such a powerful message of hope in the quote, "When something bad happens you have three choices.  You can either let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you."

Whether it be coping with the loss of a loved one, recovering from illness, seeking support after a sudden tragedy, or solving a family crisis, we are all faced with different personal struggles over the course of our lives.

Whatever conflict or challenge you are facing in your life right now, reflect on the quote.  What choice will you make?

-Will you let it define you?
-Will you let it destroy you?
-Will you let it strengthen you?

Whatever challenge you are faced with, remember that the choice always remains in your power.

Additionally, don't try to overcome your challenges alone.  At TriCity Family Services, we are here to help you overcome your struggles and provide you and your family the support they need.  If you are in need of mental health or counseling services, please call our office directly at 630-232-1070.

We have lots of information to share this month.  Please enjoy our June e-newsletter!

We would like to thank and recognize the Kane County Cougars for their generous donation of $1831 to TriCity Family Services. The money was raised through the Cougars charity initiative that raises money for many local communities throughout the year. The check was presented at their June 7th game to Jim Otepka, Sue Klinkhamer, Miranda Barfuss, and Courtney Laverty. We are truly grateful for their support.

Did you know that June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)Awareness Month?

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop following a traumatic event that threatens your safety or makes you feel helpless.  Most people associate PTSD with battle-scarred soldiers - and military combat is the most common cause in men - but any overwhelming life experience can trigger PTSD, especially if the event feels unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can affect those who personally experience the catastrophe, those who witness it, and those who pick up the pieces afterwards, including emergency workers and law enforcement officers. It can even occur in the friends or family members of those who went through the actual trauma.

PTSD develops differently from person to person. While the symptoms of PTSD most commonly develop in the hours or days following the traumatic event, it can sometimes take weeks, months, or even years before they appear.

Traumatic events that can lead to PTSD include:

  • War
  • Natural disasters
  • Car or plane crashes
  • Terrorist attacks
  • Sudden death of a loved one
  • Rape
  • Kidnapping
  • Assault
  • Sexual or physical abuse
  • Childhood neglect

Or any shattering event that leaves you stuck and feeling helpless and hopeless

Courtney Laverty, Development Manager

GENEVA - For nearly half a century - 47 years - TriCity Family Services has been providing counseling services for thousands of individuals and hundreds of families and couples in Batavia, Geneva, and St. Charles.

The nonprofit organization's counselors, which now number 38 in full and part-time roles, have guided troubled marriages and troubled teens and helped guide families through crises. Its website lists various services, from anger management to workshops for children whose parents are getting divorced.

Batavia resident Jim Otepka has been at the helm for 25 years. As the agency's third director, Otepka spoke about the impact the agency has had on local families.

Starting in 1967 as the TriCity Family Project, it truly was a cutting-edge model of how to deliver affordable quality family therapy to the local community, he said.

"It's a great privilege to be part of this agency because it belongs to the community," Otekpa said. "We were founded at a very grassroots level by wonderful community volunteers, and we have been supported incredibly by the community through the years."

One of the agency's roles is to create community, particularly for families who might feel disconnected, he said.

"We hope we are a link or a way of connecting them to this community," Otepka said.

One measure of the success in its work is in updates from past clients, he said.

"I often hear of their children, and sometimes even their grandchildren," Otepka said.

As Otepka begins his 26th year leading the agency this year, 2014 also marks the 25th year of its Wilderness Challenge program.

The program takes a group of 30 teens - originally those at risk of a difficult transition from middle school to high school - who take a six-day, five-night canoeing and camping trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, 1.4 million acres of forests interconnected lakes and waterways.

The trip was expanded to include students making the transition from ninth grade to 10th grade. Participants leave today. With bus travel, the trip is a total of eight days.

Over 800 Lobsters Delivered Father's Day Weekend
for the Great Lobster Fly-IN

Susan Parker (TCFS Board Member), Rob Anderson (Event Chair), and Lori Beales (TCFS Volunteer)

Against the backdrop of blue and sunny skies, on Saturday, June 14th, The Friends of TriCity Family Services held their popular Great Lobster Fly-In fundraising event.  Over 800 live Maine lobsters were delivered to the heart of downtown Geneva by Prime Seafood, Yorkville.  For the second consecutive year, Prime Seafood also provided frozen shrimp.  In addition to the seafood, guests had other options to complete their meal: Josef's Meats and Deli, Geneva, provided fresh 8 oz. filets, Hahn's Bakery, Geneva, provided two types of bread and Kimmer's Ice Cream, St. Charles, provided pints of ice cream.

All food orders for this event were placed during the month of May and early June, and guests picked up their orders at the Kane County Courthouse parking lot in Geneva.  In selecting their food orders, guests had the option of choosing if they would like their lobsters live, or have them steamed on site.  Professional steaming services were provided by Arthur J. Looten & Son, Inc. and their impressive wood-burning engine.

TriCity Family Services is proud to announce that the Great Lobster Fly-In netted over $6,000.

Hallie Hudson (TCFS Development Associate) and her sister Allison Engelhard

TriCity Family Services would like to thank Rob Anderson, Great Lobster Fly-In Event Chair, Sue Broxham, and the other hard working volunteers who came out to provide event help.  The volunteers greeted guests, filled food orders, handed out lobster bibs and wrapped steamed lobsters.  The agency would also like express gratitude to the Great Lobster Fly-In Presenting Sponsor, FONA International.  Additionally, TCFS would like to thank BFC Integrated Print Management for their donation in covering the cost of all print materials for this event.
