Nearly one in four adults experience a diagnosable mental health disorder every year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. In addition, mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and Canada.

May is Mental Health Awareness month, and TriCity Family Services challenges you to take a stand against the stigma attached to mental health.

No group is immune to mental health issues, and mental health problems occur in people from all walks of life - regardless of age, sex, education, class, race, or religion.

"Many people with serious mental illness are challenged doubly. On one hand, they struggle with the symptoms and disabilities that result from the disease. On the other, they are challenged by the stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental illness. As a result of both, people with mental illness are robbed of the opportunities that define a quality life: good jobs, safe housing, satisfactory health care, and affiliation with a diverse group of people."World Psychiatry. Feb 2002; 1(1): 16-20.

Through advocacy, awareness, and education, we can work together to end the stigma.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Educational Article

Mental Health: A Workplace Priority
  • 46.4% of all Americans will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime (Center for Disease Control).
  • Mental Illness and Substance Abuse costs US Organizations an estimated $105 billion in lost productivity each year (Harvard University Medical School).
  • Depression, the most common mental disorder in the workplace, accounts for an annual $44 billion in lost productivity (National Institute of Mental Health).

Investing in a mentally healthy workforce is a sound business strategy. When employees receive effective treatment for mental illnesses, the result is lower total medical costs, increased productivity, lower absenteeism and presenteeism, and decreased disability costs (American Psychiatric Association). The Partnership for Workplace Mental Health, a program of the American Psychiatric Foundation, offers a variety of free tools and resources for employers interested in taking action to create mentally healthy workforces - for more information, check out: www.workplacementalhealth.org.

One especially effective strategy is to offer proactive, early-intervention support to employees through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefit. Employers that provide an EAP benefit for their employees report reduced medical, disability and workers' compensation claims, as well as cost savings through improved performance and productivity. The Return on Investment in an EAP benefit runs about $3 in savings for every $1 invested (Employee Assistance Professionals Association). TriCity Family Services reaches out to local organizations to offer a variety of EAP models, ranging from a comprehensive, full-scope employee benefit, to fee-for-service onsite intervention, consultation and training.

To learn more about the EAP program, please call (630) 232-1070 to speak to Laura Kowalski, Sr. Clinician/Consultant and EAP Coordinator, or Kathy Gibson, Sr. EAP Consultant.  Additional information can also be found at www.tricityfamilyservices.org.
