Community Connections

Recently, the staff at TriCity Family Services attended an all-day retreat based on the theme of communication.  As a team, we reflected on the types of communication that we use on a daily basis, and also worked to distinguish which are most effective or ineffective.  The brainstorming session helped us reassess our daily interactions with one another, and helped us see our strengths as well as area to improve upon.

At TriCity Family Services, we challenge you to also reflect on how you communicate.

As humans, we have become reliant on using our advancing technology as means to communicate.  Technology has both pros and cons.  Communication through use of emails, texts and tweets enables us to exchange information at a rapid-fire rate, however we are losing out on the powerful benefits of nonverbal communication that we receive when we communicate face to face.

Nonverbal communication ranges from facial expression to gestures to body language, and according to experts, a substantial portion of our communication is nonverbal.

Good communication skills are essential for helping you advance in your personal and professional life.  You will also reap the rewards of stimulating your brain, and improving your mental health overall.

Seeking Sponsors for our Easter Adopt-a-Family Program

The Friends of TriCity Family Services are sponsoring the Adopt-a-Family Easter program for our client families in need again this year.  For many families we serve, it is a year-round struggle to provide meals for their loved ones.

Sign up to sponsor a family and we will provide you with the gender and ages of all family members and ask you to put together a food basket, complete with Easter goodies for the children.

If you would like to help in another way, we are also collecting donated gift cards from grocery stores to be used for this program.

To sign up to help a family, please email Mary Kay Dowling or call 630-232-1070.

Thank you for your support, generosity and consideration!
Good Communication and Mental Health Support

Communication is challenging for many of us from time to time. For those with a mental health diagnosis, and his or her support team, good communication is imperative.

Phrases and Actions to Avoid

If you have a family member or loved one living with a mental health condition, here are things to consider in your communication strategy.

  • Don't tell your loved one that how he or she feels is "selfish".
  • If your loved one asks you to stop a behavior because it is causing anxiety, is a trigger, etc, STOP immediately.  Your failure to do so speaks volumes about your love for the sufferer.
  • Do not mock your partner when he or she asks for you to stop talking and listen, when told that your noise (radio, voice, etc) is overwhelming.  Do not be facetious.
  • Do not feign ignorance and say "I didn't know ______ was a trigger for you" if your partner has clearly communicated that it is. Your partner isn't buying it.  Forgetting is understandable from time to time, but your partner will pay attention to pattern and frequency.
  • Beginning a statement with "Why?" can be a trigger for your loved one.  We want people to treat us with kindness, even if they don't understand our actions. Having to explain to people solves nothing, and has the effect of making your loved one feel judged, thereby adding to stigma and anxiety.
  • Beginning a statement with "just," as if the desired behavior is simple to achieve and your loved one isn't making an effort to change or cope."Just think positive."
    "Just get over it."
    "Just think about something else."

A Successful Savory Sips Event

Kristin Behmer, Friends President (Right), and her daughter Cortney enjoy a glass of wine at The Wine Exchange.
On Saturday, March 8, 2014 TriCity Family Services partnered with The Wine Exchange in St. Charles to host its Savory Sips wine tasting event.  Over 100 guests, including Wine Exchange members, stopped by the event to show their support.  The Wine Exchange sampled seventeen wines as guests socialized, enjoyed light hors d'oeuvres and participated in a raffle that included several savvy specialty items.

At the event, attendees had the opportunity to buy a bottle of wine and leave it behind as a donation for TriCity Family Services 25th Annual Benefit and Auction.  Over 30 bottles of wine were donated to the agency to be used in a live auction package at the event on Saturday, April 26th, 2014.

The event netted over $2,300 to help the agency continue to provide quality counseling services to all ages and all incomes in the community.  TriCity Family Services thanks Co-Chairs, Lisa Tracy and Trish Lockwood for dedication in planning this evening and the volunteers who made this event possible.  Additionally, TriCity Family Services is grateful for the support of The Wine Exchange and its staff.
