Half Term Newsletter
October 2013
The Scouts of Chavagnes
The Scouts of Chavagnes, earlier this month, at the Cross of General Charette, La Chabotterie.
Dear friends,

We are currently enjoying a two-week holiday at Chavagnes, so I want to make use of a little spare time to keep you up to date with our news.

In this newsletter, we bring you news of some of our alumni, the latest activities of the Scouts de Chavagnes, sports news and an appeal on behalf of our choirboys.

I've also included some announcements about forthcoming events.

If you can help us with a little gift this Christmas, we would be very grateful.

And there are some other ways you can help us; by joining in the promotion of our work.

  • Visit our facebook page and 'like' it, then share it with your friends and invite them to 'like' it too. (Every year we recruit new pupils via internet ..; it really works.)
  • Forward this newsletter to your friends by email, with a little personal comment, letting them know about your connection with Chavagnes.
  • If you manage a website, include a link to Chavagnes on your website.
  • Spread the word to families and friends and to parish priests about the good work that is going on here.
And we also need your prayers! In fact it is a real partnership of prayer, because we especially remember our benefactors at College prayers and you are regularly remembered at the Altar during Holy Mass.

God bless you.
Sincerely,

Ferdi McDermott, Principal

Alumni News ...
Brother Stephen MorrisonBrother Stephen Morrison, O. Praem., (OC, 2002-2005) has just made his Solemn Profession as a Norbertine Canon. He is pictured here at the end of the ceremony on 28th August.

Brother Stephen was a founder pupil at Chavagnes and went on to read French at Oriel College, Oxford, before embracing the religious life.

Congratulations to Brother Stephen.

Meanwhile our leavers from last June are busy getting down to study in Thomas Aquinas College, USA; the Sorbonne and Lampeter, Wales. We hope to give you more news of them soon.

Chavagnes friends Laurent Gibelin (OC, 2009-2012) has just started studying Sciences at ICES, just down the road from us in La Roche sur Yon. His father dropped us a line over the summer; you can read it (in French) here

Laurent is pictured above, second from left, at our Summer Ball this July. On the far right is Paul de Guibert (OC., 2007-2010) who distinguished himself in 2011 by gaining a place at Cambridge aged 15, and then deciding not to take it up. Next in line is Maximilian Micallef Eynaud, our current Head Boy, who is in his final year at Chavagnes and hopes to read Aeronautical Engineering next year. Then we have Nathan Hopkin (OC, 2006-2011) who is now studying Product Design and getting on very well. Next comes Nichamon Nelly Ridjana who was at the Girls' school just before it closed and who is now studying at Universit Jean Monnet, Saint-Etienne.

Then, Benjamin Bellec (OC, 2007-2010) is now at La Flche, (Prytane National Militaire) studying, among other things, how to be a pilot. Maggie and Anne Boyles (external students at the College 2008-2010) are more or less permanently top of the class at the University of Kansas. All great young people with a deep love of Christ, the best of friends, and looking forward to a bright future.
Rugby victories
Chavagnes Rugby
We are paticipating in sports championships for the whole Pays de la Loire region this year, against other private schools. There were some great performances on 16th October from the MINIMES (boys born in 1999). They played 5 matches of Rugby 7s against different local schools and won 3 out of the 5 matches, including victories against Notre Dame d'Orvau, Notre Dame de l'Esprance and Le Lyce St Saint-Joseph du Loquidy. The CADETS team is also doing well. After the holiday, there will also be a series of football matches.
Well done, boys!!

This year we are expanding our programmes for tennis, hockey and basketball.
Cassocks for choirboys
Chavagnes Choir
More choir photos on Chavagnes Facebook page

We are just finishing some important building works to the Choir Room at the back of our chapel. When the boys come back after the half-term holiday they are going to have a wonderful and atmospheric place to practice their choir singing and to learn about music from our Choirmaster, Mr Tyldesley and Organist Mr Lloyd.

But we need help to make sure the choirboys have everything they need. That's why I'd like you to visit our special campaign online to make sure we give a great Christmas gift to the choirboys this year. We are aiming to buy the things we need (new cassocks, music equipment, books, musical scores ...) before the Feast of St Nicholas on 6th December, so please see what you can do to help during November. There are special gifts and rewards for anyone who can give a gift of 25 and above.

Scouts with a difference
'Scouts de Chavagnes' is a special apostolate of Chavagnes International College. Our members are called to be modern-day knights at the service of Christian Europe.

There are currently two patrols (the Panthers and the Tigers). Regular meetings and camps teach the boys to work together, to do their best, to be resourceful; all in the service of God and neighbour.

Help us to help Catholic youth!
A while ago we contacted our friends to ask for urgent financial assistance. Thank God, a number of people were extremely generous and we were able to 'come up for air' financially.

This year is still financially difficult for us. We need another 40,000 euros over the next few months to make sure we get through the year whilst still keeping our calm. So if you can manage to help us with a donation, small or large, before Christmas, that would be superb. If 400 people could manage to give us 100 euros each, that would be fantastic.

For French tax-payers, there is the advantage that you can normally deduct 2/3 of the value of your gift from your tax bill in 2014. So a 100 euro donation only costs you 33 euros. We can give you a RECU FISCAL.

If you are a UK tax-payer and want to make a tax-efficient Christmas donation for Chavagnes, please email us (donation@chavagnes.org).

You can make a small payment any time by card online and leave us a short message. Just visit our ONLINE PAYMENT PAGE.

Teaching and Learning
Mr Crawford, Assistant Principal.
At Chavagnes the teachers keep on learning, while they teach. This year, four members of staff are engaged in part-time study for advanced degrees (in Philosophy, International Relations and Education).

Our Masters also eat together and pray together ... sharing a community life with our pupils, all for the greater glory of God.

Chavagnes is a great place for Catholics to learn and a great place for Catholics to teach.
