MAZEL TOV! It's a New Rabbi!
On behalf of the Congregation B'nai Jacob Board, it is my great pleasure to announce the hiring of Rabbi Jeffrey Sultar as the Congregation's Rabbi. The initial term of the agreement, which is effective November 1, 2015, is for two years, with an option for a third year.
We are thrilled to welcome Rabbi Sultar and recognized him at our Board meeting Monday evening, November 2. We look forward with much excitement to our community growing and flourishing as we embark on a new period in our Congregation's illustrious history. We plan for every congregant to have the opportunity to meet Rabbi Sultar, and will be organizing introductory and welcome events over the coming months.
Our new Rabbi will lead Shabbat Services beginning the weekend of Friday, November 13.
Rabbi Sultar brings over 20 years of experience to CBJ, with the essential qualities necessary to lead, strengthen and build our Community. Additionally, he is passionate about providing for the spiritual needs and growth of the congregation, including insightful sermons, education classes and providing pastoral guidance and support for our congregants.
Rabbi Jeff Sultar has served a number of congregations, most recently Congregation B'nai Israel, a Conservative synagogue in Rumson, New Jersey. He also served as Interim Rabbi at Beth Am Israel, a Conservative congregation in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania; as Senior Rabbi at Mishkan Shalom, a Reconstructionist congregation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and as Rabbi at Congregation Beth Shalom, a Reconstructionist congregation in Naperville, Illinois.
Rabbi Sultar taught in the Religion Department at Temple University. He directed the Green Menorah Program, which addressed the global climate crisis from a Jewish perspective, seeking changes in individual, congregational and organizational practices, as well as advocating for changes in public policy. Prior to that, he was the Campus Rabbi at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Before Cornell, he was the Campus Rabbi at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT. His appointment there represented the first time that a college preparatory boarding school had a full-time on-campus rabbi.
Rabbi Sultar's passion for teaching has taken him several times to the National Havurah Summer Institute where he taught "The Earth is the Lord's: Judaism and Environment" and "Does a Golem Count in a Minyan?" He also helped develop and taught in the innovative "Jewish, Alive & American" program in Philadelphia, an intensive year-long course for people rediscovering their Judaism as adults. As a speaker for Shomrei Adamah, a Jewish environmental group, he gave talks throughout the northeast on the connection between Jewish values and environmental concerns. His essay, "Adam, Adamah and Adonai: The Relationship Between God, Humans and Nature in the Hebrew Bible" is included in "Ecology & the Jewish Spirit: Where Nature and the Sacred Meet." He also contributed to the family education book "Growing Together: Resources, Programs, and Experiences for Jewish Family Education."
Rabbi Sultar is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. While there, he received the Berger Prize in Practical Rabbinics and the Socolow Prize for Outstanding Essay. His undergraduate education was at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts; his concentration was in English and he also completed a program in Environmental Studies. Rabbi Sultar also participated in the Institute for Jewish Spirituality for Rabbis, a two-year program of retreats, meditation practice and weekly text study.
Rabbi Sultar lived in Jerusalem for a year where he studied at Pardes, an egalitarian Orthodox yeshiva, actively explored nooks and crannies all over Israel, saw as many movies as possible at the Cinemateque, and paid regular visits to an Ethiopian family. Prior to his time at RRC, Rabbi Sultar was the Gaudino Fellow at the Center for Common Security (CCS) in Williamstown, MA, for which he led workshops throughout the United States on themes of global security, participatory education, and leadership. Part of the work of CCS was promulgating a model for education in which college students initiate and teach their own classes. This work grew out of a course that Rabbi Sultar helped create, and which ran for over 15 years. While at CCS, he founded its Natural Security Program which explored environmental dimensions of international security. He also taught a course on "Natural Security" as an adjunct professor at Williams College.
Rabbi Sultar has written a book (currently in search of a publisher) about the spiritual side of his solo, 27-month, 46 state, 16,000 mile bicycle journey throughout the United States, during which he bartered work in exchange for food and lodging in over 400 communities. In addition to movies, his interests also include music, art, reading, theater, travel, nature, and racquet sports of all kinds. He lets few days go by without at least a taste of chocolate. He is married to Julia Bell, has a daughter Maya in her first year of college, and is stepfather to two older children, Miller and Liz.
L'Shalom,

A Message from Rabbi Jeff Sultar
Many years ago, I bicycled into a small town in southern Louisiana, in the heart of Cajun country, and managed to find a family to barter work for in exchange for a place to spend the night. As they showed me the camper out in the yard where I would sleep, they said, "The first time you're here, you're a guest. The second time, you just make yourself at home. Let's just pretend that this is your second time here."
This memory came back to me as I've excitedly anticipated beginning as rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jacob. November is a bit of an odd time to join a community as its spiritual leader, as we're now already in the midst of the synagogue year. We have ahead of us the pleasure of getting to know each other, of beginning to travel this part of the journey together. And to move things along, we can dispense with "first visit" formalities and just dive into things.
We need to find opportunities to seek each other out. I will be doing that with you, but, please don't hesitate to seek me out as well, especially if you are - or know someone who is - in the midst of a particular pressing need.
I look forward to talking with you. If you would like to meet about, well, just about anything that might be on your mind, please be in touch. E-mail me anytime - rabbi@congbj.org. And while you can always call the synagogue, my responsibilities will often take me out of the building, so never hesitate to call my cell phone during 'normal' hours - (732) 606-5381. And please, call my cell phone any time for a life-cycle emergency or for any other pressing matter.
I typically check e-mail at least several times during any given day, but please also know that I have a 'dumb' phone, so I won't see e-mails unless I'm at a computer. I do receive text messages just fine, and can even manage short responses. While I always prefer talking in person, one of e-mails' best features is that it's good for finding a mutually-good time to meet.
Aside from looking forward to jumping into life at Congregation B'nai Jacob, the other major recent change in my life is that my wife, Julia, and I recently became "empty nesters." While it's been a decade since our older children left home, our youngest daughter started college just a few months ago. So, this is a time of big transitions and new beginnings for us. We live in the West Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, and if you happen to know any secret backroads and shortcuts, please let me know.
I look forward to seeing each of you soon.
L'Shalom,
Rabbi Jeff Sultar

Macy B. Solomon Religious School
|

From the Director of Education, Robert Patsko
The school has passed the two-month mark. We have been getting into the heart of our subject matter and we will begin to address our Chanukah curriculum.
In the coming months, I will be addressing spirituality through a Jewish lens in this space, in the school and in more depth in my email to parents. The focus of Jewish spiritually will be focused on our liturgy and services. Family educational opportunities will address this topic. I tend to feel that even the notion of spirituality within a Jewish context has been a casualty of modernism and perhaps even in the traditional religious world prior to modernism, the emphasis on Jewish law may have led to this problem. Prayer is a powerful mode, one of several, to spiritual living, and often misunderstood or neglected due to feeling of boredom or lack of understanding. Jewish prayer, especially in the Conservative and Orthodox movements is heavy on the Hebrew, and this can create a disconnect for many of us who did not grow up with Hebrew as a primary language. The school's Hebrew/Prayer curriculum will address the meaning behind the prayers but more importantly, the meaning behind prayer. I hope that by the end of the year, our school families will view prayer in a different way, even for the more experienced, and embrace this path to spirituality and holiness.
Upcoming Dates
Wednesday November 4 - Religious School Resumes Friday, November 20 - Family Shabbat Sunday, November 22 - No Religious School Wednesday, November 25 - No Religious School Sunday, November 29 - No Religious School
Kol Tuv,
Robert Patsko

Support CBJ's Jacob's Ladder, Jewish Legacy Program
What will your legacy be? In one way or another, you've enjoyed the warmth, closeness, tradition, and support of a vibrant Jewish Community here in Phoenixville. Once you are gone, who will keep these traditions thriving for future generations? Jewish tradition teaches that one of our key responsibilities is to make the world a better place for our children and grandchildren. A Jacob's Ladder Legacy Gift is a simple and meaningful way to help ensure a strong Jewish future for our family and community. You can support the Jacob's Ladder Jewish Legacy Program by completing a simple letter of intent. This is NOT a binding document, merely an indication of what you might do in the future. Completing the Jacob's Ladder document will take less than five minutes, its impact on B'nai Jacob is substantial. For more information, contact Stephen Schur at sschur1@gmail.com or Mamie Troy at Mamie.Troy@gmail.com The Jacob's Ladder Jewish Legacy Program is a partnership between CBJ and the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. More information about their program is available online.
