Electronic Form 990-N Now Submitted Through IRS.gov

Electronic Form 990-N submissions should now be made through IRS.gov instead of the Urban Institute's website. Filers will need to complete a one-time registration prior to submission.

New Nonprofit Employment and Wage Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released data on nonprofit employment and wages for 2007-2012, showing how the sector fared during the Great Recession.
  • Nonprofit employment increased from 10.5 million to 11.4 million.
  • Nonprofit wages increased from $421 billion to $532 billion.
  • Number of new nonprofits increased from 232,396 to 267,855.
  • Private sector employment declined during the same period, but grew faster than the nonprofit sector as the economy recovered.

IRS Updates Mileage Deduction Rates

The IRS has updated their mileage deduction rates for 2016. The rate for business and medical / moving both fell, to 54¢ and 19¢ respectively, while the rate for charity volunteers stayed at 14¢ (where it has been since 1998).
