Number of Tax-Exempt Organizations Increases 13%, Applications Double
The recently released 2014 IRS Data Book shows a big increase in the total number of tax-exempt organizations and applications for tax-exemption from 2013 to 2014.
  • Total number of tax-exempt organizations increased 13% to 1,723,315
  • There were 117,538 applications for tax-exemption in 2014, more than double the number in 2013.
  • The number 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations increased more 60% to almost 149,000.
A combination of an internal IRS mandate to clear application backlogs and the new, shorter Form 1023 EZ may be behind the increase.
