IRS May Broaden Rule to Police Political Nonprofits

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen indicated that the IRS may require 501(c)(4)'s and 527s to operate under the same definition of political activity. Political parties and super PACs are 527s, and most are already regulated by the Federal Election Commission, but the expanded rules would include some fairly active groups only registered with the IRS.

Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Hold a Nonprofit 'Shark Tank' Competition...

Todd Dagres, a Boston venture capitalist, plans to hold a competition similar to the TV show "Shark Tank" for nonprofits. Nonprofits will pitch their missions to a group of "investors" who then decide whether to provide funding.

The Council on Foundations recently cancelled a similar competition they had planned for their annual conference in response to criticism from the sector.
