A glimpse into the life and thoughts of an artist

Julia Cameron calls them Believing Mirrors. Coaches refer to them as Accountability Partners.

I have developed several accountability partnerships with other artists and "solo-preneurs" throughout the country. Some of these people I have met, others I have not. All are a phone call and several time zones away.

Each call lasts 30-60 minutes during which we discuss all that we are doing and all that we hope to achieve in the next week or two.

The purpose of each call is to maintain focus on our goals and to encourage one another.

I recently added another caller to my accountability team. Ann is younger and very enthusiastic; I wanted to keep in touch with her. Adding an additional "AP" could have become a burden until I decided to give her just one task to follow on my growing list of things to do.

Ann's job is to help me finish writing and illustrating my first children's book - this year!

This is a project dear to my heart.
I wrote the first draft and had it critiqued last year. It has "been resting" ever since.

Two weeks ago, when I asked her to help me stay on track with my book; I was filled with excitement. I wanted to charge ahead and send a rewrite to her within two weeks.

Ann listened to all that was on my plate and wisely suggested that all I do is read through the story before our next call. I agreed but thought to myself, "at this rate, it will never get done!".

Ann was right. It took me two weeks, until the morning of our second call, to read through the story.

I was right too. Once I read through it, I was energized enough to do an edit before our call.

We all have busy lives. Many of us also have big dreams. Sometimes big dreams come with easy-to-follow steps to take. More often than not, fear and resistance tag along for the ride.

How about you? Is there someone in your life who can be an accountability partner or believing mirror for you?

Do you have a project you would like to start but can't seem to begin?

Is there just one small step you can take to kick-start your task?

No matter what the project, one small step is all that is needed right now. Just one step will get you started.

An accountability partner or believing mirror will help you keep going.

"One of the saddest lines in the world is, 'Oh come now - be realistic.' The best parts of this world were not fashioned by those who were realistic. They were fashioned by those who dared to look hard at their wishes and gave them horses to ride."
