Confessions of a Serial Painter
In case you haven't noticed, I paint in series. That means I follow the thread of an idea until I lose interest.
You can see the result of my threads by clicking on one of the many galleries listed along the right side of my website (www.artofaloha.com). Each gallery holds a series of paintings.
I did not start out to be a serial painter; but once an idea takes hold of my creative brain, I am compelled to continue to follow it until I'm satisfied that I have expressed it fully in my paintings.
I don't have much control over this compulsion, so clearly I am a "Serial Painter".
Did you honestly think I want to continue to keep painting mermaids? Heck! I didn't even want to start to paint mermaids four years ago when I began!
Mermaids arrive, asking to be painted, and I am too nice a person to say no to mermaids. Who says "no" to mermaids?
The latest mermaid incident took place in the doctor's office. I'm perfectly fine, no worries, I was there for a regular eye exam.
Have you ever thought that Doctors invent new and different tests for us to take just for the fun of it?
Don't think harshly of them for this, we all have skill sets we like to use because they make us feel good about ourselves; we feel important because we "know things".
Every few years my ophthalmologist has me take a "visual field test". It's a fun test of me watching pinpricks of light bouncing around a screen. I feel like a Jedi Master when it's over, so I go along with the test. The doctor feels good, I feel good ... it's a win-win scenario.
This time as I put the eye patch over my left eye, I felt like a pirate and giggled. Then I surprised the technician by grabbing my journal from the chair next to me to write "Pirate Mermaid".
It seems my mermaids (and mermen to come) want to be pirates too.
I hope you aren't tiring of mermaids, because they keep asking me to paint them!
The Pirate Mermaids will be painted soon. Today I am sharing the newest members of my mermaid family: MerTwins andBaby MerDreams.
You'll find more mermaids at

Send your "baby mermaid photos" to me. Who knows, they could turn into paintings one day.
