Executive Director's News

The Vermont Association for Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (VAMHAR) shifted into high gear with our recruitment for a new Executive Director. Advertisements appeared in Vermont newspapers, as well as several cyber listings and our newsletter (see above). The VAMHAR board has set targets for the month of March for receiving applications and the month of April for the process of interviewing applicants.

For this Executive Director's news, I'd like to highlight two themes: one a direct accomplishment of VAMHAR's staff, and one emerging from Vermont's replacement of functions of the flooded Vermont State Hospital.

First, VAMHAR's Vermont's Recovery Coach Academy held its latest session of a training program started in 2010. The Vermont Recovery Coach Academy (VT RCA) was held February 25th-March 1st, 2013 in Dorset, VT at the historic birthplace of Bill W., the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. The newly developed Academy curriculum now has more focus on mental health/co-occurring issues and cultural competency. A trained Recovery Coach is a person who helps remove personal and environmental obstacles to recovery, links the newly recovered person to the recovery community, and serves as a personal guide and mentor in the management of personal & family recovery.

The Academy's well-deserved renown spreads beyond Vermont. The latest session included five participants from New York, two from Virginia and twenty-three from regions throughout Vermont. Over 200 graduates have completed the VT RCA training since its inception.

The next Academy will be held in September at Camp Spofford, NH.
