The Arc Baltimore, BWI Partner To Offer Wings For Autism

To alleviate the stress individuals with autism spectrum disorders often experience when traveling by air, The Arc Baltimore and other chapters of The Arc throughout Maryland are partnering with BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, Southwest Airlines, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and AIRMALL to hold Wings for AutismŽ.

To be held on Saturday, December 6 at BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport, Wings for AutismŽ will include 50 families from across Maryland. Wings for AutismŽ offers individuals with autism or other intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families a chance to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security, and boarding a plane. Wings for AutismŽ also gives airport, airline, TSA professionals, and other personnel the opportunity to observe, interact, and deliver their services in a structured, learning environment. Stay tuned for highlights of this exciting project and information on the next one.

Best Art In The Round Yet

Nearly 400 people attended Art in the Round in support of The Arc Baltimore. Guests bid high on iPads and their phones to take home a coveted piece of art created by artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Seventy-nine featured pieces were chosen by our selection committee from more than 200 submissions!

One lucky guest won a 65" Ultra HD 3DTV donated by Chris and Jen Brandenburg valued at $7,500. Other attendees took silly souvenir photos at the Pixilated Photo Booth, danced to the music of the DJ and enjoyed the delicious food and Twisted Tulip specialty drink. Over $35,000 was raised for The Arc Baltimore and 60% of auction bids went to the artists - it was a wonderful night for all! Click below to see event photos.

Adopt A Family This Holiday

Outreach and Family Services always provides special assistance to our families to ensure they can enjoy holiday meals and gift giving/ receiving opportunities in November and December. We need your help to make it happen.

We invite companies, families, book clubs, service groups or any caring person to consider adopting a family of children with disabilities. This time of year can be really hard on Moms & Dads who want to make it a festive and memorable time. If you would like to collect/purchase all the fixings for a traditional meal, let us know. We have a suggested grocery list. Or help us fulfill the wishes of some of the children and their parents (who never want anything, but we insist they get gifts too).

For a family food list or to adopt a family and receive all the ages, gender info, clothing sizes, etc., contact Mercedes Thompson or 410-296-2272 ext. 5318.

The Arc Baltimore and Battle Monument School are collaborating to provide free workshops, called Sibshops, for brothers and sisters, ages 6-13, of children with special needs. Sibshops provides a fun, energetic, and activity driven experience during each model. The Sibshops model intermingles information, discussion activities, games, cooking activities, and special guests. Most of all, Sibshops seek to afford siblings with opportunities for peer support.
