Clownin' Around Hits The Big Top
Clownin' Around, a clown troop at our center in Dundalk led by volunteer Steve Carter, had a unique opportunity last week. They performed for professional clowns in town with The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus! The troop performed several routines and then stayed for lunch with the pros. Thanks to the FreeState Clown Alley #30 and John Ringling North II/Steve and Ryan Tent, for organizing the event. See all of the luncheon pictures on our Flickr page.

Loyola Panel Raises The Bar
Thanks to a group of students taking the Art of Rhetoric at Loyola University Maryland, an awareness event on campus drew about 80 students to hear from a panel of seven adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who talked about their lives - including jobs, marriage, bowling, and family. Two of the panelists, Tara and Heather Lillie, are pictured here with student Peter Hadjokas, and the class professor, Dr. Andrea Leary. Also participating with the panel was volunteer Chelsea Barrett who joined The Arc Baltimore Buddy Program several years ago and who now counts Tara and Heather among her closest friends.
Dr. Leary also challenged her students with a writing assignment that involved the students volunteering and visiting The Arc program sites to talk with supported individuals and their direct support staff. In addition, the students researched the legislation and issues pertaining to rate reimbursement levels for direct support staff that related to the recent minimum wage bill in the MD General Assembly. The students wrote persuasive essays based on their experience and research.

April Is Volunteer Appreciation Month!
The Arc Baltimore is so thankful to all of our volunteers and interns. So much of what we, as an agency, are able to accomplish is due, in part, to the tremendous amount of time and support that you dedicate to us every day.
THANK YOU!

Victory!
As a result of extensive advocacy during the legislative session, the minimum wage bill that has now passed the General Assembly creates a statutory mandate for an annual 3.5% rate increase from FY 2016 through FY 2019 that will ensure that the Governor's budget includes funding for direct support wages at approximately 130% of the minimum wage. This will allow The Arc Baltimore, and other community providers, to offer more competitive wages for the demanding jobs performed by our direct support staff.
Read the full alert here. If you would like to receive updates on important advocacy issues that impact those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, sign up now.
