Clowns from The Arc Entertain Ringling Bros. Clowns

Clownin' Around, a clown troop at our center in Dundalk led by volunteer Steve Carter, had a unique opportunity last week. They performed for professional clowns in town with The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus! The troop performed several routines and then stayed for lunch with the pros. Thanks to the FreeState Clown Alley #30 and John Ringling North II/Steve and Ryan Tent, for organizing the event.

April is Autism Awareness Month

The Arc and  The Autism NOW National Autism Resource & Information Center are working to empower people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with the information and resources they need to live their lives to the fullest potential.  We are also working to help others become more accepting of people with ASDs.

With the CDC now declaring that 1 in 68 children may be impacted by autism spectrum disorders (a jump of 30% from earlier figures), it's a fair bet that each of us knows someone with autism or someone who has a family member or friend with autism.

That's why it's so important to dispel all the myths and misinformation to understand and accept what having an ASD really means.  And that's why The Autism NOW Center exists, to weed through the volumes of information out there and provide high-quality, vetted resources and information to people with autism and other developmental disabilities, their family, friends, colleagues, teachers, employers and others.

Victory!

As a result of extensive advocacy during the legislative session, the minimum wage bill that has now passed the General Assembly creates a statutory mandate for an annual 3.5% rate increase from FY 2016 through FY 2019 that will ensure that the Governor's budget includes funding for direct support wages at approximately 130% of the minimum wage. This will allow The Arc Baltimore, and other community providers, to offer more competitive wages for the demanding jobs performed by our direct support staff.

Catherine Raggio Retires

Governor Martin O'Malley announced that Catherine A. Raggio, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Disabilities (MDOD) will retire at the end of this month. Appointed by Governor O'Malley in February 2007, Raggio came to the State of Maryland with more than 30 years of experience in the disability community.  Prior to her appointment, she was the founder of Independence Now, a center for independent living (CIL) serving Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and served as its executive director for 12 years. From 1980-1989, she led the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council.

What's Your
Assistive Technology?

Technology has transformed the way we live, work, learn, and communicate. Many of us use Assistive Technology (AT) every day whether we have a disability or not. The alarm clock that woke you up this morning, the GPS that gets you from point A to point B, the remote that controls your television, or better yet, a cell phone that can do all of the above. Many of us don't even think of these items as AT, but in reality these are all assistive devices that make our lives easier. And isn't that what technology is all about?

Room Needed to Grow
and Heal

The Arc Baltimore's Trauma Program offers therapy and intervention to assist individuals with disabilities to communicate about and work through past experiences of abuse, neglect, and other trauma-inducing situations. Participants will partake in Yoga, music therapy, individual trauma therapy and group session therapy. Our goal is to help them heal in ways that will enable them to lead rewarding and fulfilling lives with gainful employment. In order to fulfill this need, the Trauma Program needs an available room 3 times a week to accommodate 6-8 at a time - and ideally private meeting space for two. The space needs to be accessible with access to bathrooms.

Please contact Dr. Karyn Harvey at kharvey@thearcbalitmore.org

if you know of an available space.
