Greetings!

Walking my dogs, Huckleberry and Blueberry, Sunday morning I noticed that the early morning shadows were leaning north of the sidewalk. I observed the first yellow and gold leaves sprinkling lawns. Two clear signs we're shifting seasons soon.

Moving into Fall we cross the Vernal Equinox, the day of the calendar when day and night are of equal length. For local divers this means that we will have less sunlight feeding algae and our regional visibility will improve. Last winter we were consistently seeing vis of 30 to 40 feet in the Hood Canal. Local water temperatures drop 2 to 3 degrees at depth (surface temperature can vary 15 degrees from summer to winter). Experienced local divers know that Fall, Winter and Spring are great times to explore the beauty and diversity of Pacific Northwest waters.

We've had loads of fun this summer; Discover Scuba events, our annual Clear Lake Camp and Dive was attended by nearly 25 divers (mark August 8 to 10, 2014 on your calendar and make cabin reservations now for next year's event), our annual Missile Silo Dive, Great Annual Fish Count dives, Advanced, Altitude, Equipment Specialty, Rescue and Divemaster classes to name just a few of our programs.

We have a full plate of offerings coming up, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, Instructor Development Course, IDC Staff training, Emergency Oxygen Provider, Wrek Trek trip to British Columbia (sold out), Cozumel, Catalina (Spring Break) and Bonaire trips.

What's next for you? We're recruiting divers for our next Divemaster program starting September 16. Rescue Diver starts October 17. Open Water, Advanced and Specialty diver classes start monthly. If you are ready to take the next step up the PADI education ladder there is no better team that ours at HydroSports to help you reach your diving goals and dreams.

Call today to plan your next dream.

Dive Club Meeting Plans

Join us September 11 for our next Dive Club meeting starting at 6:30 PM with a pot luck dinner.

Our speaker, Jeff Trembly, will help us prepare to save a dive by answering the question, "What goes in to a Save-A-Dive Kit?" As a PADI Instructor who has worked locally as well as in the Caribbean, Central America and Hawaii, Jeff has extensive experience and will be sharing recommendations that are modestly priced and easy to implement.

October 9th our Dive Club meeting will host Barry Dunford, Regional Manager for PADI Americas Region 2. Barry has hunted for undersea treasure with Mel Fisher, owned a PADI Dive Shop in Vancouver, Washington and has for many years assisted PADI dive shops in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Northern California, Idaho and beyond.

Our topic will be "What Does it Take to Become a PADI Pro and Where Can You Go?" If you've never considered the benefits to your existing or future career of PADI professional training or are looking for new career opportunities, join us to hear from Barry and members of the HydroSports team.

Almost everyone in America has been touched by Breast Cancer.

We all know someone who has been affected by Breast Cancer; our family members, our friends or possibly ourselves. One in eight women and one in one thousand men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, 23% will die from breast cancer (www.cancer.org).

In 2008, Eugene Skin Divers Supply organized and co-sponsored the first annual Dive for a Cure at the Woahink Lake Day Use Area (Gazebo) in Florence, OR and raised almost $20,000. In 2009 we raised $30,000. In 2010 over $42,000.00 In 2011 over $50,000, and in 2012 participants raised over $52,000.00.

All proceeds from money raised from Dive for a Cure are donated to the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute for breast cancer research and education. Oregon Health Sciences University is a tax-deductible non-profit IRS 501(C) (3) organization. You can help personally by participation or a generous pledge to Dive for a Cure.

Anyone can sign up for the 2013 event at any time. Please fill out and mail in the
registration form
, so that we know who is participating. You can also watch out for the flamingos.

Thank you for supporting Eugene Skin Divers Supply and Dive for a Cure in the quest to raise monies and awareness for Breast Cancer programs in our area.

CatalinaDive Catalina Island, Spring Break 2014

If you missed our 2013 trip to Catalina this year plan ahead for our fourth trip to this spectacular Spring Break destination. Our trip dates are March 24 to 28, 2014. We'll return to the Catalina Canyon Resort, we'll spend two days aboard the King Neptune diving with Catalina Scuba Luv (six dives total), we'll dive the Casino Point Dive Park and have a super time doing it all.

This year's trip, including ferry from Long Beach to Avalon, four nights lodging, six boat dives and air, tanks and weights for a day at Casino Point was under $700. The 2014 price is not set but will be similar. Non-divers this year paid $389 per person. This is a great family trip with lots of non-diving activities available.

Save the date and join us! A $100 deposit will hold your space.
