Kick Off the New Year
Get Your Dive Gear On
January
2013
Greetings!

Pennant FishWe've cruised past December 12, 2012 and demonstrated that the Mayans simply ran out of space (the world did not end as their calendar predicted). We've moved past Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year). We're on a roll to more diving, more adventure and more excitement.

To help create more adventure for you our Education Team has evolved. Some of our Assistant Instructors and Divemasters are now Instructors, Carol and Gregg Cline, Kristen Seabury, Jay Olsen and Jim Smith. Jerry Heidel and Jeff Barnes completed Divemaster training. Dan Chatfield who served as a DM several years ago has returned to active duty. Several Divemaster candidates are in the wings preparing to share their enthusiasm with you.

You may have noticed a new "badge" on the banner, Meetup. Meetup is the world's largest network of local groups. We've started a new Meetup group, Willamette Valley Scuba Divers and Explorers. Our goals include reaching out to the entire regional dive community to create opportunities to connect, communicate, breathe compressed air and grow the diving community. Please take a moment to become a member now. Click HERE to go to our Meetup page and join us.

To create more dive travel opportunities we're partnering with several friends to create a consortium of shops offering group trips. We're working with Dive N Trips and PCH Scuba as well as Fly and Sea Dive Adventures. By collaborating on adventure travel you'll have more opportunities to explore the globe with a host whose job is to make sure you have a fabulous experience.

We appreciate your referrals and recommendations. Your testimonial about your experience with HydroSports is the best advertising. Thank you for supporting our local business community.

Let us help you capture your diving goals and dreams! Visit or call soon!

Sincerely,

Starting in 2013, ODFW will include rock scallops on the same free harvest card. Anyone recreationally harvesting abalone OR rock scallops will need to obtain a free harvest card in addition to an Oregon Shellfish License. The harvest card will include a section for scallops starting in 2013.

Dive Catalina Island Kelp Forests, Bat Rays and Garibaldi
March 25 to 29, 2013

Diving the kelp forests of Santa Catalina Island, 26 miles across the sea from Long Beach, California, is one of the easiest and most interesting experiences on the US west coast. Located near the intersection of "tropical" and northwest critter zones, the marine life is abundant and diverse.

Our plan is to board the Catalina Express (the ferry from Long Beach to Avalon Harbor) on Monday morning March 25, 2012. We're staying for the next four nights at the Catalina Canyon Resort, a very diver friendly destination.

We're diving Tuesday, March 26, aboard the King Neptune, a 66 foot long, 18 foot wide dive boat. Our plan is two boat dives Tuesday morning.

Tuesday afternoon, a guided dive at the Avalon Dive Park, just a few blocks from our hotel. Wednesday, back aboard the King Neptune for three more boat dives. Thursday, a day of shore dives in the dive park. Friday, a leisurely ferry ride back to Long Beach.

Casino Point Aquatic Life
So, how much will all this cost, you ask? $699 per diver. $389 per non-diver. A $50 deposit is due with your reservation. Full payment is due by February 1, 2013.

What's included?
  • Round trip ferry on the Catalina Express
  • Four nights lodging at the Catalina Canyon Resort (ppdo)
  • Two days of boat dives aboard the King Neptune Dive charter
  • Lunch and beverages aboard King Neptune
  • Tanks and weights aboard the King Neptune.
  • Tanks and weights for four shore dives at the Casino Point Dive Park

What's not included?

  • Travel to Long Beach Harbor from home
  • Meals (other than those aboard the King Neptune)
  • Equipment rental
  • Room upgrades
  • What will rental gear cost on Catalina?
  • A full set of rental gear, BCD, regulator, wet suit, hood, weights, gloves from Scuba Luv, the local dive shop and operator of the King Neptune, will run $65.00 the first day, $32.50 each additional day.

Contact Mark Fischer to reserve your space on our third annual Catalina trip.
