We have come to the end of another incredible year in Westonka Schools. I wish all of our students, staff and families a relaxing and refreshing summer.
Work at the district continues over the summer months as we move forward with facilities improvement projects that will address our current space constraints.

Class of 2016 Contemplates its Westonka Legacy--
At MWHS Commencement Ceremony
|
"What's your legacy?" After considering that question since the beginning of the school year, the Mound Westonka High School class of 2016 graduated May 29 during the school's 98th Annual Commencement Ceremony.
Principal Mark McIlmoyle recognized the many achievements of the 170 graduates, including academics, leadership, fine arts and athletics.

Westonka Students Honor American Heroes--
At Memorial Day Ceremony
|
A Memorial Day ceremony May 30 at the Gillespie Center in Mound gave students from the Westonka School District an opportunity to honor the men and women, past and present, who have served our country in the military.

Westonka Teams Place in Top 20--
At Destination Imagination Global Finals
|
Two of Westonka's Destination Imagination teams competed last week in the Global Finals of this international competition in Knoxville, Tennessee. Team Oh No, Not Again! placed 13th of 89 teams in the Middle Level Structural Challenge, and Team #Basic finished in 20th place of 64 teams in the Secondary Level Structural Challenge.

Making Memories at Wolf Ridge--
A Westonka Tradition
|
Making memories that will last a lifetime, Westonka's fourth-grade students, along with a group of staff and parents, spent an exciting week at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minnesota last month.
Shirley Hills fourth-grader Ethan Chase said, "It was the best experience I have had in my four years of schooling!"

Westonka Summer Institute Returns to Costa Rica
|
Westonka Summer Institute, the district's credit-bearing immersion program, will return to Costa Rica this summer. A group of 10 Mound Westonka High School students and two adults will dive into scientific research, be immersed in Costa Rican culture and explore the rain forest during their nine-day adventure June 14-22.

Senior Choir Members Earn Awards--
Bid Farewell to Beloved Director
|
Fourteen members of the class of 2016 took part in some of their last performances with the Mound Westonka High School choirs at spring concerts in May. The Concert Choir performance on May 23 also marked one of the last concerts for director Kate Larson, who is leaving MWHS to spend time raising her three young children at their new home in Wisconsin.

Westonka Middle Schoolers Enjoy Spanish Weekend--
At El Lago del Bosque Language Camp
|
Several Westonka students attended Spanish Weekend at El Lago del Bosque Language Camp in Bemidji, Minnesota, May 12-15.
The weekend was total Spanish immersion--the counselors and staff members spoke exclusively Spanish with the students, which was a great way for the kids to practice speaking the language.

Westonka's Mike Wallace Nominated--
For SHAPE Teacher of the Year
|
Hilltop Primary School physical education teacher Mike Wallace has been nominated for the SHAPE America Elementary Teacher of the Year.
SHAPE, Society of Health and Physical Educators, recognizes outstanding teachers each year in physical and health education.
The winners in each category will be announced in November 2016.

Register Now for Summer Strength & Conditioning
There's still time to register for the White Hawks Summer Strength and Conditioning Program, which begins Monday, June 6, at Mound Westonka High School. The program offers coach administered, team oriented, intense lifting and conditioning workouts for any Westonka student entering grades 6-12.
White Hawks Baseball Celebrates Season
The Mound Westonka High School varsity baseball team celebrated its season at an awards banquet June 2 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The White Hawks finished the season 12-11.
