Bond Referendum Approved by Voters 
On Tuesday, May 10, Westonka School District voters approved $22.95 million in bond funding to build a 600-seat performing arts center and a community athletic and recreation center at Mound Westonka High School, with unofficial results as follows: 68% Yes (1,847 votes) to 32% No (868 votes).

We sincerely thank all of the parents and community members who supported the board's vision for the future of Westonka. 
 
Westonka Presents Second Annual Awards--
For Top Teachers, Volunteers 
Mound Westonka High School teacher Sue Simonson was named 2016 Westonka Teacher of the Year in a special ceremony May 6 at MWHS.

Also recognized were the 2016 recipients of the Ann Bremer White Hawks Award for community service: Sarah Reinhardt and Scott "Scotty B" Bjorlin.
 
Hilltop Primary School Welcomes 'Grandfriends'--
For Day of Music, Fun
Hilltop Primary School had 341 extra cars in the parking lot May 5, as 600 grandparents and special guests arrived to celebrate Grandfriends' Day.

The well-orchestrated schedule included grade-level vocal concerts, which showcased the talents of Hilltop students. 
 
Long-Time Employees, Retirees Honored--
At Annual Banquet
At the annual banquet May 4 at the Lafayette Club, the Westonka School District honored six dedicated employees who will be retiring this year: Brenda Berent, Pamela Berent, Sherri Miller, Dorie Seifert, Jeannine Schultz and Julie Taintor.

Additionally, 25 Westonka employees were honored for their years of service to the school district.
 
Quiz Bowl Competes at Nationals--
For Second Time Ever 
The Mound Westonka High School Quiz Bowl team competed at the 2016 Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago April 29-May 1. A total of 80 teams from around the United States qualified. This was the second national tournament qualification in Westonka history (2007 was the first).
 
MWHS Band Members Selected--
For All-State Ensembles 
Following a highly competitive audition process, two Mound Westonka High School instrumentalists have been selected for prestigious All-State music groups. Junior Adam Fish will play oboe with the All-State Orchestra for the second consecutive year, while junior Zach Gahl will play alto saxophone with the All-State Concert Band.

Students are chosen for these elite ensembles based on auditions from students around the state
 
Westonka Future Problem Solving Raising Funds--
To Help Send 16 Students to Internationals
 
A record 16 students from Grandview Middle School and Mound Westonka High School have earned the distinction to compete at the 2016 International Future Problem Solving Conference in East Lansing, Michigan, in June.

The FPS Internationals qualifiers are hoping to raise $8,000 for registration and transportation expenses.
 
Annual Spring Band Concert--
Features Special Guests
trumpet.jpg The Spring Band Concert will be held Monday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mound Westonka High School gymnasium. The program will feature Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, along with two special guests. 
 
Belgian Waffles Football Fundraiser--
This Saturday at Grandview 
The Third Annual White Hawks Football "All You Can Eat Belgian Waffles Breakfast" Fundraiser will be held on Sunday, May 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Grandview Middle School cafeteria. Adult tickets (ages 11 and older) cost $10, youth tickets (ages 6-10) cost $8, and children ages 5 and under are free! Tickets can be purchased at the door.

MWHS juniors chosen for Boys, Girls State Conventions
10 Mound Westonka High School juniors have been selected by the Mound American Legion Post and Auxiliary to represent the Westonka community at the annual Boys and Girls State Conventions.

Westonka referendum approved
According to unofficial results, the Westonka School District referendum asking voters for $22.95 million for two new facilities was overwhelmingly approved.
Sports Highlights
Boys Track Has Best Ever True Team Finish
The Mound Westonka High School boys track and field team had its best ever finish at the Section 6AA True Team meet, which was held May 10 at Orono High School. The White Hawks boys placed third out of 11 teams.
 

Tough Week for White Hawks Boys Tennis
The sun was out and the temperatures were perfect for tennis the first week in May, but unfortunately for the White Hawks boys team, the results didn't match the weather.

White Hawks Baseball on Roller Coaster Ride
The White Hawks baseball team has been on a roller coaster this spring, with good and bad outings sprinkled throughout the season. After playing an almost flawless game, they will have a clunker. Then, they will rebound to have a solid performance ... and so it goes.
