Election Day is Next Tuesday, May 10--
Absentee Voting Hours Extended

The Westonka Schools bond referendum special election is only four days away. On Election Day, Tuesday, May 10, polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are two polling locations for this election: the Educational Service Center and Mount Olive Church. Find your polling place ahead of time at http://pollfinder.sos.state.mn.us/

In-person absentee/early voting will be open at the ESC during the following times:

Friday, May 6 - 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, May 7 - 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Monday, May 9 - 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

MWHS DECA Travels to Nashville--
For International Competition
A total of 20 DECA students from Mound Westonka High School competed at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Nashville, Tennessee, April 24-27. Over 17,000 students from around the world took over Music City to compete in business, marketing, entrepreneurship and hospitality-related events.
 
Washington Post Once Again Ranks MWHS--
Among 'America's Most Challenging High Schools'
Mound Westonka High School has once again been named one of "America's Most Challenging High Schools" by the Washington Post. Just over 10 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools earned placement on the list this year, and MWHS was one of only 28 Minnesota schools to make the cut.
 
Student Senate Presents Prom--
'Under the Sea'
"Under the Sea" is the theme for this year's Mound Westonka High School prom. On Saturday, May 7, the fun begins at 5 p.m., when family and friends are invited to the MWHS gym for the Grand March and the coronation of the Prom King and Queen.

Vying for the title of Prom Queen are seniors Erin Ehlers, Madison Golden, Megan McGraw, Meghan Matt, Reilly Nesbitt, Shelby Smith and Paige Warren. Candidates for the prom king are seniors Boe Bailey, Taran Besant, Noah Byers, Mason Elliott, Anson Kuznik, Ryan Reid and Connor Swanson.
 
MWHS Students Exhibit Work--
In Congressional Art Competition
Eight students from Mound Westonka High School were selected to participate in the 2016 Minnesota Third Congressional District Art Competition.

A special reception for students and their families was held April 25 at Artistry at Bloomington Center for the Arts.
  
Enjoy Perfect Date Night--
At Coffeehouse Jazz

Come hear award-winning jazz ensembles and enjoy an evening of coffee and delicious desserts at the annual Coffeehouse Jazz May 13 and 14, 7:30 p.m., at St. John's Church in Mound. The event will feature Madd Jazz (the Mound Westonka High School jazz choir) and the MWHS Jazz Band, performing traditional jazz and swing music, as well as modern popular music.
 
MWHS Honors Distinguished Students--
For Third Quarter

Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the third quarter of the 2015-2016 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student breakfasts at the high school April 28 and 29. 
 
Concert Choir Exceeds Fundraising Goal--
For 'Music for Mitch' Charity Concert
The Mound Westonka High School Concert Choir performed a charity concert on May 1 at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Mound. The students planned the event, which raised over $7,000 for The Pinky Swear Foundation.

Grandview stages 'The Lion King Jr.'
Hundreds of community members packed four performances of Disney's "The Lion King Jr." at Grandview Middle School April 14-17. 

Westonka facilities vote nears
Westonka residents will know next week whether the school district will get an indoor athletics and recreation center and a performing arts center.
Sports Highlights
White Hawks, Tigers Clash on the Court 
The Mound Westonka High School boys varsity tennis team had a conference match against the Hutchinson Tigers on April 26. With temperatures hovering in the 40s, the match was a grind for players and spectators.
 

Track Team Overcomes Cold, Wind at Orono Meet
The Mound Westonka High School track and field team competed at Orono High School on April 26. "There were many strong performances in the cold and wind," said coach Sara Schwartz.
