Student Sleepout Raises Awareness, Funds--
For Teen Homelessness
In an attempt to understand the effects of teen homelessness and raise awareness of the problem, Grandview Middle School seventh-graders Michael Kurtz and Carson Meritt spent four nights sleeping in a car in the school parking lot.

Mound Westonka Hosts Region 2AA Band Contest--
Wind Ensemble Earns Highest Overall Rating
Mound Westonka High School hosted the annual Region 2AA Instrumental Large Group Contest on Feb. 22. A total of 11 bands from Orono, Dassel-Cokato, Buffalo, Delano and MWHS participated in a full afternoon and evening of performances.
 
The event was a judged contest, with the auditioned MWHS Wind Ensemble earning the top Superior rating from all three judges and the highest rating of the day. The MWHS Symphonic Band earned an Excellent rating from all three judges.

District Art Show at Westonka Library--
Features 25 Student Works
Westonka Schools is participating in two art shows in March in celebration of Youth Art Month. 

In addition to the 10 artworks by Westonka students that are currently on display at Hopkins Center for the Arts, another 25 pieces will be featured in a district art show at the Westonka Library in Mound next month.

MWHS Alum Inducted--
Into Track & Field Hall of Fame
Lynn Nelson Stott, 1980 Mound Westonka High School graduate and Olympic athlete, was inducted into the Minnesota Track and Field Hall of Fame on Feb. 19. She competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Shirley Hills Students Earn Sumo Showdown--
After Fundraising Success
Keeping his promise to Shirley Hills Primary School students, who raised over $8,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society last month, Principal Scott Eidsness faced off with third-grade teacher Mike Piccioli in a sumo wrestling challenge in front of the whole school on Feb. 19.

Shirley Hills students raised more than $8,000 in their Pennies for Patients drive last month.

MWHS Senior Captures Spirit of the Lakes--
In Festival Artwork
Mound Westonka High School senior Katelynn Babb was recently named the winner of the 2016 Spirit of the Lakes Festival Art Contest. 

Her oil pastel drawing will be used on apparel and promotional materials advertising and celebrating the annual Lake Minnetonka event, which will be held July 15 and 16 at Surfside Park in Mound.

MWHS Honors Distinguished Students--
For Second Quarter 2015-2016
Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the second quarter of the 2015-2016 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student breakfasts at the high school Feb. 18 and 19. 

All Six Westonka Teams Advance to State--
In Destination Imagination Competition
All six Westonka Destination Imagination teams will advance to state competition after placing at the West Metro Regional Tournament at Maple Grove High School on Feb. 20.

Track and Field Hall of Fame inducts MWHS alum
Friends, family, former coaches and fellow runners gathered at the Maple Grove Community Center on Feb. 18 to celebrate the induction of three accomplished runners into the Minnesota Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Prep athletes of the week
Aaron Cashman - The sophomore remained undefeted on the season after winning the 106-pound championship at the Class 3A, Section 6 meet. 

Westonka teachers up for Teacher of the Year
Four Westonka teachers are among the 114 candidates for 2016 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, a program organized by Education Minnesota.
Sports Highlights
White Hawks Wrestlers Send Four to State
The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling team placed 10 of 12 wrestlers in the Section 6AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament and advanced four to state: sophomore Aaron Cashman and seniors Ryan Reid, Joe Duffy and Lee Schmalz.


Gymnastics Team Takes Fifth at State
Watertown-Mayer/Mound Westonka placed fifth at the Class A state gymnastics team tournament Feb. 19. The following day, MWHS ninth-grader Teagan Schmidt competed at state as an individual, placing 14th in the all-around competition.


Girls Hoops Stays Competitive in Conference Play
Mound Westonka High School girls varsity basketball is winding down the conference season. Although wins have been tough to come by, the young White Hawks team has shown improvement, with closer games in the past week.
