School Board Approves Revised Budget--
Sets Adjustment Goal
|
On Jan. 25, the school board approved the revised 2015-2016 budget and reviewed a projection for next year's budget. Our budget planning for 2016-2017 represents the discipline of aligning expenses to revenues on an annual basis so that larger reductions aren't required in the future.

Meet Westonka's Candidates--
For Minnesota Teacher of the Year
|
 Four Westonka teachers are among the 114 candidates for 2016 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, a program organized by Education Minnesota. Only three other school districts in the state have more teachers up for the award this year, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Shakopee.
Mindy Barrett, fourth-grade teacher at Hilltop Primary School; Sue Simonson, business education teacher at Mound Westonka High School; Dena Spanjers, special education teacher at Shirley Hills Primary School; and Julie Thomas, language arts teacher at Grandview Middle School; will represent Westonka in the Teacher of the Year competition.

Junior Scientists Impress Judges--
At Hilltop Science Fair
|
 Hilltop Primary School hosted its Science Fair and Family Fun Night on Feb. 4. A total of 60 junior scientists took part in the event.
They presented their projects during the day to students from the Mound Westonka High School honors chemistry class and then again in the evening to a panel of judges from Hilltop.

Grandview Students to Sleep in a Car--
To Raise Awareness of Teen Homelessness
|
The University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute estimates that there were over 4,000 unaccompanied Minnesota youth who experienced homelessness in 2013. This included 2,211 minor youth, ages 17 and younger.
To better understand the effects of teen homelessness, raise awareness of the problem and raise money for the Open Hands Foundation, Grandview Middle School seventh-graders Michael Kurtz and Carson Meritt plan to sleep in a car for a week. The project is part of the Future Problem Solving Program in which students identify real problems in their community and implement real solutions.

Community Comes Together--
For Shirley Hills Carnival
|
 The Shirley Hills Primary School Carnival brought families and the community together to enjoy a festival of games and excitement on Feb. 5. The annual event, planned by the PTA, is the school's biggest fundraiser, and organizers said that this year was one of the best yet and raised significant funds to support the education of Shirley Hills students.

Westonka Coaches Honored--
For 'Breaking Barriers'
|
Two Westonka coaches were recently honored with the 2016 Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership Breaking Barriers Award, which is which is given to "individuals or organizations that have broken barriers, overcome challenges and/or strive to provide athletic opportunities for girls and women of all races, all ages and all levels of ability."
Bob Kuehl and John Legeros each received the award in conjunction with the 30th National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration Feb. 3 at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul.

MWHS Science Olympiad Qualifies--
For State Tournament
|
 The Mound Westonka High School Science Olympiad team overcame stiff competition at the region tournament, which was held Feb. 6 at Minnetonka High School, to earn a trip to the state tournament.
The Science Olympiad State Tournament will be held Saturday, March 5 at Bethel University in St. Paul.

Three Medals for Speech Team--
At Dassel-Cokato Meet
|
 The Mound Westonka High School speech team competed at the Dassel-Cokato meet on Feb. 6.
Senior Sophia Kenton took seventh place in Poetry; eighth-grader Anders Erdahl took sixth place in Informative; and eighth-grader Michael Andreyeschev took seventh place in Prose.

MWHS Dance Team Presents--
13th Annual Junior Hawkettes Camp
|
Students in grades K-7 are once again invited to participate in the Junior Hawkettes Dance Camp, which will be held after school Feb. 22-25 in the Mound Westonka High School cafeteria. Participants will learn basic dance technique and a dance routine from MWHS Hawkettes dance team members. The week of camp concludes with a special performance at the Hawkettes Dance Spectacular on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

220 Students Earn--
Spotlight on Scholarship Awards
|
The Minnesota State High School League recently awarded 220 Spotlight on Scholarship certificates to Mound Westonka High School students in grades 9-12 for their achievements in the classroom and their participation in fine arts and athletics this winter.

Wrestling Alums Inducted--
Into Hall of Fame
|
Mound Westonka High School wrestling alumni Dorian Thompson, B.J. Anderson, Loren Davis and Chuck Hediger were inducted into the MWHS Wrestling Hall of Fame at meets on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5.

Three White Hawks Ski at State Meets
Seniors Anson Kuznik and Samuel Abegglen and junior Noah Brammer braved below zero temperatures at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota to compete in the state alpine and Nordic meets Feb. 10 and 11.
 Boys Hockey Wins Big on Senior Day
On Senior Day, Feb. 6, the White Hawks boys hockey team took care of business with a convincing 8-1 drubbing of the New Ulm Eagles.
White Hawks Place Third at Leopold/HaglundThe White Hawks wrestling team hosted the annual Leopold/Haglund Invitational on Feb. 5. The White Hawks placed all 10 wrestlers in the top six, finishing just behind state-rated Waconia and Eastview for a third-place finish.
