District Awarded Hennepin County Grant--
For Outdoor Facilities Improvements
|
I am pleased to announce that Westonka Public Schools is one of 14 recipients of a large facilities project grant from Hennepin County for 2016. At its Dec. 15 meeting, the Hennepin County Board awarded $170,000 to the district for reconstruction and amenity improvements to a multipurpose field at Mound Westonka High School.

Bremer Named to All State School Board--
Recognized as 'Champion for Students'
|
Recognition as an All State Board Member is the Minnesota School Boards Association's (MSBA) most prestigious award. Each year, MSBA's awards committee selects up to seven individual board members for the All State School Board. Ann Bremer, a Minnesota school board member with over a decade of service to students in Westonka and Intermediate District 287, was one of seven board members chosen for the award this year.

Hats Off to 'Mr. Mike'!--
Bus Driver Gives Students Holiday Headwear
|
Primary school students riding on Westonka Bus 14 received a holiday surprise from their driver, Mike Riley, on Wednesday afternoon. Each student received a White Hawks winter hat, specially made by Mike's wife, Kay. The hats were even embroidered with the students' names so that stray hats left on the bus could be returned to their owners.

Bomar, Fish are MSHSL ExCEL Representatives--
For 2015-2016 School Year

Juniors Anjelique Bomar and Adam Fish have been selected as the Mound Westonka High School recipients of the Minnesota State High School League's ExCEL Award. ExCEL--Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership--is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and are model citizens.

Westonka Educators 'Break Through'--
At TIES Conference

A total of 27 staff members from the Westonka School District attended the 2015 TIES Conference Dec. 14 and 15 at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis. Teachers representing all buildings, as well as members of the district technology team, attended over 150 sessions on technology and learning.

Westonka Students Show Spirit of Giving--
Collect Items for WeCAN
|
Across the district, Westonka students got into the spirit of giving this season with collection drives for Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN). Mound Westonka High School students collected gift cards, teen gifts and personal hygiene items in two separate drives earlier in the month, while the other schools donated their collections over the past week.

Registration is now open for the FIRST™ Robotics team at Mound Westonka High School. The new Minnesota State High School League program is open to all students grades 9-12.

 Girls Basketball Secures Win Over Blake
The Westonka White Hawks girls basketball team ended a busy three-game week with a victory at home. On Dec. 12, the White Hawks had a good matchup with Blake, winning 47-42.
Boys Hockey Wins Two of Three on Week
It's been said in sports that if you keep working hard, do things the right way and concentrate on things within your control, then good things will happen. This must have been the script that the White Hawks boys hockey team followed the past couple of weeks.
Wrestlers Split Duals, Place Sixth at Bunyan Invite The Mound Westonka High School wrestling squad had a busy week, opening up Wright County Conference action with a win and a loss and earning a respectable sixth-place finish in the Paul Bunyan Invite in Brainerd.
