Westonka Gets in the Zone--
With Smart PE
Westonka Schools is leading the way in "Smart PE," a way of transforming gym class using wearable sensors. The Heart Zones System, integrated district wide in Westonka this school year, provides real-time feedback on things like heart rate, steps, calories burned, distance, speed, cycling power and cadence, time in zones, step rate and step intensity. 

Forty educators from around the United States gathered at Hilltop Primary School on Dec. 2 to become certified in Heart Zones PE. 

Westonka Audiences Eat Up--
'Little Shop of Horrors'
The Mound Westonka High School Theater Department presented four spectacular performances of the musical comedy "Little Shop of Horrors" Nov 12-15. This devious musical, which has devoured the hearts of theatergoers for over 30 years, is a delicious sci-fi smash about a man-eating plant.

Thaler Sports Center Celebrates 10th Year--
With Family-Fun Events Dec. 12
The David M. Thaler Sports Center will celebrate its 10th year of operation with a series of special events on Saturday, Dec. 12. The White Hawks boys and girls hockey teams will take the ice, and there will be family-fun events, including food, prizes and open skating.

Winter Band Concert--
Offers Warm Escape
Escape the cold and enjoy some warm holiday music at the Mound Westonka High School Winter Band Concert on Monday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. 

Presented at the MWHS gym, the concert will feature over 100 MWHS students in the Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

Local Clarinetist Sarah Porwoll-Lee to Perform--
On MWHS Stage
Mound Westonka High School will host a professional concert on Friday, Dec. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Little Theater. 

The concert is part of a series centered on the production of Minnesota clarinetist Sarah Porwoll-Lee's new album, "History is going to change."

Don't Miss the Nordic Ski Scramble--
This Sunday, Dec. 6
Mound Westonka High School Nordic Ski Scramble is this Sunday, Dec. 6, at the American Legion in Mound from 9 a.m. to noon. 

The event features a delicious omelet breakfast and a fabulous silent auction.

Girls' hockey off to a sizzling start in the west metro
Nine teams, lots of talent have girls' hockey in the west metro starting the season strong. 

Unified schools
Playing flag football or going out bowling can do much to break down barriers between students with and without intellectual disabilities.

Hockey Against Hunger seeks to fill Westonka Food Shelf this December
The cold has arrived, so it seems appropriate that the White Hawks girls and boys hockey team moves up its annual Hockey Against Hunger food drive to help stock the Westonka Food Shelf.
Sports Highlights
White Hawks Wrestlers Take Fifth at Turkey Burn
The White Hawks wrestling squad hosted the third annual Turkey Burn Invitational Nov. 30 at Mound Westonka High School. The Turkey Burn marked the team's first action of the year, and the White Hawks had a solid fifth-place finish in a very balanced seven-team field.
 

Girls Swim Advances Six to Finals at State
The Mound Westonka-Holy Family girls swim and dive team wrapped up the 2015 season with all six state qualifiers advancing to the final round of competition in one or more events by placing in the Top 16 in prelims. The Class A meet was held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Nov. 19 and 20.  

Boys Hockey Dominates in Home Opener 
After a pair of sobering losses Up North last weekend to Greenway on Nov. 20 and Hibbing/Chisholm on Nov. 21, the White Hawks came home to the friendly confines of Thaler Arena for the first contest in front of their home crowd Nov. 28 against Lake of the Woods.


Cherrier Named to AP All-State Football Team
The Mound Westonka White Hawks' all-purpose all-star, Isaiah Cherrier, has been elected by statewide media to the 2015 Minnesota Associated Press All-State Football Third Team. Cherrier was one of only seven high school non-seniors in the state recognized by the Associated Press this year.


White Hawks Reflect on Record-Breaking Year
There was plenty to pick from for the highlight reel at the Mound Westonka High School football awards banquet, which was held Nov. 22 at the Gillespie Center in Mound.
