For Homecoming Week

Westonka's weeklong Homecoming 2015 was picture perfect. Beautiful fall weather, enthusiastic crowds and events designed for the entire community contributed to an exciting week.
"Through my many years of sharing in the joy and spirit of Homecoming, this year stands out as one of the best!" said Mound Westonka High School Assistant Principal Marty Fischer. "The school spirit and Westonka pride that was shown in so many ways was as great as ever."

Fire Safety Made Fun--
For Hilltop Kindergarteners

Every year during National Fire Prevention Week, Hilltop Primary School kindergarteners get a visit from a man in a big red truck.
Darren Poikonen of the Mound Fire Department visited the school on Monday to teach fire safety to Hilltop's kindergarten classes.

Two MWHS Seniors Score in Top 5 Percent on PSAT--
Earn National Merit Commended Student Honors
|
Two Mound Westonka High School seniors have earned "Commended Student" recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Mason Elliott and Michael Milner scored in the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) last year.

The White Hawks started off their Homecoming Week strong and ended it even stronger - and not just on Haddorff Field. On Friday Oct. 2, seniors on the football team gave their away jerseys to teachers who have made a difference in their lives.

Join in the Fall Festival Fun--
Hilltop Octoberfest is this Saturday
|
Octoberfest, Hilltop Primary School's annual fall festival and biggest fundraiser of the year, will be held this Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school. Last year the event raised over $21,000, and the Hilltop PTA, which organizes the event, hopes to continue that great tradition this year.

WeCAN Coat Drive Ends Next Week--
Share the Warmth Today

The Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN) Coat Drive will be coming to an end next week. Please drop off new or gently used coats, snow pants, hats, mittens and gloves at the Early Childhood Center, Hilltop and Shirley Hills primary schools or Grandview Middle School by Tuesday, Oct. 13. Coats can also be dropped off at the WeCAN office.

Public input sought by school board on long-range district facilities plan
The Westonka School Board is reaching out for public input in the development of a long-range facilities plan, covering the entire district.
Board learns about efforts for consistency in uniforms
The Westonka School District is trying to standardize sports uniforms used in the district, and the school board learned about these efforts from Superintendent Borg at the Sept. 28 school board meeting.

White Hawks Win Big on Homecoming
On Oct. 2, in front of the biggest crowd at Haddorff Field in recent memory, the White Hawks football team kept its perfect record intact with a commanding 58-14 win over Concordia Academy to cap off Homecoming Week.
Boys Soccer Returns to Winning Ways
On Oct. 1, a trip to New Prague allowed the Mound Westonka High School boys soccer team to return to winning ways. Going into the final week of play, Westonka's record was a respectable five wins, four losses and one tie.

White Hawks Volleyball Splits Homecoming Week
On Sept. 29, the White Hawks volleyball team hosted the New London-Spicer Wildcats and lost 1-3. A match on Oct. 1 provided an opportunity for the White Hawks to post a win in front of their home fans (and on Senior Night, no less) against the Rockford Rockets.
Girls Tennis Wraps Up Team Season
The Mound Westonka High School girls tennis team has finished team play for the 2015 season. In their final non-conference match on Sept. 30, the White Hawks varsity defeated Eden Prairie 5-2. From there, the girls moved on to the Wright County Conference Tournament Oct. 1 and had some strong finishes.
Girls Soccer Goes 2-1 to Start off October
The White Hawks girls soccer team started off the month of October with a pair of wins and a close loss against conference rivals. The White Hawks went on the road to New Prague and Hutchinson and came away with two wins. They lost a home game Oct. 6 (3-1) to Holy Family.

Boys Cross Country Takes Second at Charger Invite
On Sept. 29, the White Hawks cross country team took its show on the road once again for the Dassel-Cokato Invitational. At Collinwood Regional Park near Cokato, Minnesota, the Mound Westonka runners finished second to Annandale at every level.
Girls Swim and Dive Defeated by Dassel-Cokato
On Oct. 1, the Mound Westonka-Holy Family girls swimming and diving team hosted the Dassel-Cokato Chargers in the fifth conference meet of the season. The White Hawks lost the meet by a score of 96-85.
