With a wide array of plans ahead of them, the members of the Mound Westonka High School Class of 2015 graduated May 31 during the school's 97th Annual Commencement Ceremony. The event marked the culmination of years of hard work and dedication for the 164 graduating seniors.

MWHS Class of 2015 'Pays it Forward'--
With Special Senior Prank

On the last day of school for seniors at Mound Westonka High School, teachers and administrators were prepared for the traditional end of the year prank. However, the MWHS Class of 2015 took a different approach this year -- instead of a practical joke, they decided to "pay it forward" to the school staff and retiring Principal Keith Randklev.

Fourth-graders Make Annual Trek--
To Wolf Ridge

Each spring in what has become a rite of passage, Westonka's fourth-grade students, along with a group of staff and parents, spend an exciting week at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center. This year, Shirley Hills students visited Wolf Ridge May 11-15, while Hilltop fourth-graders made the trip May 18-22.
Students spent the week learning about the environment and had opportunities to participate in a variety of activities, including canoeing, rope course, tree study, animal tracking, wall climbing and history.

Westonka Summer Food Service Program--
Offers FREE Breakfast, Lunch at Two Locations
|
Westonka Food and Nutrition Services will once again sponsor the USDA Summer Food Service Program to provide FREE meals for youth ages 1-18 during the summer break.
The program serves breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, June 15-Aug. 21 at Mound Westonka High School and at Bethel United Methodist Church.

Future Problem Solving Internationals - Five Westonka students will be competing at FPS Internationals June 11-14 at Iowa State University. Good luck, problem solvers!
Westonka Tech Academy - Westonka teachers will "get their game on" at the annual Westonka Tech Academy next week. The popular two-day workshop will feature hands-on sessions on a wide range of technology topics.

Starting Next Thursday at Surfside

This year's Music in the Park series begins on Thursday, June 11 with a "Kick Off to Summer BBQ" sponsored by Jubilee Foods and Westonka Community Education and Services.
The event will feature concessions, lawn games, face painting and a non-perishable food drive to benefit WeCAN's Mobile Market.
The Tuxedo Band will be performing from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Mound Westonka High School art teacher Laura Halley Hensley will be live painting at Fringe Accessories (3906 W 50th Street, Edina) this weekend during the Edina Art Fair.
Hensley was the People's Choice winner of the 2015 50th & France Art Crawl. She will be in the store painting on Friday, June 5 from 10 am to 2 pm and on Saturday, June 6 from 10 am to 3 pm.

Section 5AA Golf: Holy Family Catholic wins boys title
The Fire won the section by 17 strokes with a two-day total of 635. Delano was second at 652 with Mound Westonka falling back to third at 653.

Kuznik Qualifies for State Golf Tourney
Mound Westonka High School junior Anson Kuznik will compete in the state golf tournament June 9-10 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. Kuznik tied for third place in the Section 5AA Championship.

Doubles Team Faces Tough Competition at State
The White Hawks doubles team of sophomore Tony Levens and freshman Torsten Lee competed in the Class A state tennis tournament June 4. They lost both matches against tough competition.

MWHS Sends First Wheelchair Competitor to State
Incoming Mound Westonka High School senior Josh Altman took second place in the shot put-wheelchair event at the state track and field meet on June 5. He set a school record of 12'5".

Track Athletes Earn Season's Best Times at Sections
The Mound Westonka High School track and field team competed at the Section 2AA meet May 27 and 29 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Sophomore Dylan Smerillo had a great day, qualifying for the 200-meter finals with a time of 23.08, only .04 away from the school record.

White Hawks Baseball Seniors Honored at Banquet
The White Hawks varsity baseball team honored seniors and celebrated the 2015 season at the baseball banquet Thursday night. Coach Bob Kuehl recapped the season and talked about the importance of being a multi-sport athlete as well as being a good student.
