Westonka DECA Earns Hardware at Internationals--
Locker, Battis Take Home Back-t0-Back Trophies
Thirty-one Mound Westonka High Schools students were among the 18,000 competitors at the 2015 DECA International Career Development Conference, held in Orlando April 25-28. Over half of Westonka's representatives advanced to the final round of competition this year, and sixteen students placed in the top 10 internationally. Additionally, two MWHS students earned back-to-back second-place trophies at Internationals.

Westonka Remembers Verne Gagne--
School Board Member, Wrestling Legend
Former Westonka School Board member Verne Gagne died on Monday, April 27 at the age of 89. Gagne, best known for his professional wrestling career, served on the school board from 1967 to 1970, during the design phase of the current Mound Westonka High School.

Unified Track & Field Team Makes Debut--
At Mound Westonka High School

A new sports team at Mound Westonka High School is promoting friendship and teamwork while teaching sprinting technique and baton handoffs. Led by coach Rachel Palm, 25 high school student-athletes will compete for the first time this year as a Unified track and field team. The Unified Sports program, which is part of Special Olympics, includes teams of individuals with and without intellectual disabilities.

Hear Westonka's Award-Winning Jazz Ensembles--
At Coffeehouse Jazz May 8 and 9
Mound Westonka High School musicians will present Coffeehouse Jazz on May 8 and 9 in the Fellowship Hall at St. John's Church in Mound. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. 

The event will feature Madd Jazz (MWHS jazz choir) and the MWHS Jazz Band, performing traditional jazz and swing music, as well as modern popular music.

Rep. Erik Paulsen Joins 'Buddies'--
For Lunch at Shirley Hills

Students at Shirley Hills Primary School had a special guest join them for lunch on April 28.

 

U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen's office contacted Laura Metzger, Westonka director of food and nutrition services, after she spoke at the School Nutrition Association Legislative Conference in March and asked if the congressman could stop by for lunch.

Early Packet Pickup Friday

Westonka is hosting its first Color-A-Thon fundraiser on Saturday, May 2, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Mound Westonka High School track. Click the link below to get all of the important details about the event, including the Early T-Shirt/Event Packet Pickup Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Thaler Arena.

Congratulations to Charlie Jo Bailey--
Westonka Athletic/Activities Student of the Week
The Westonka Activities Department is proud to name Mound Westonka High School sophomore Charlie Jo Bailey the Westonka Athletic/Activities Student of the Week for the week of April 27, 2015.

In three conference games last week, Bailey went eight for 11 with three home runs (all in one game), scored six runs, had four stolen bases and recorded eight RBIs.

Load Up on Breakfast for White Hawks Football--
At All-You-Can-Eat Belgian Waffles Fundraiser
The Second Annual Mound Westonka White Hawks Football All-You-Can-Eat Belgian Waffles Breakfast fundraiser will be held May 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Grandview Middle School cafeteria. 

Advance tickets may be purchased at a discounted price ($1.00 discount per ticket) from coach Nick David or any MWHS football player before May 13.

Girls LAX to Host Pork Chop Dinner Fundraiser--
And Potted Flower Sale
The 1st Annual Mound Westonka White Hawks Girls Lacrosse "Pork Chop Dinner and Potted Flower Sale" fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mound American Legion Post at 2333 Wilshire Blvd, Mound. Cost is $14 per ticket and take-out is available.

White Hawks Baseball Sweeps Dassel-Cokato

The White Hawks varsity baseball team defeated the Dassel-Cokato Chargers 5-3 in seven innings on Monday, April 27 behind senior Michael Abegglen, who had two extra base hits. They beat the Chargers again the next day, 6-1.

Mixed Bag for White Hawks Tennis

The Westonka boys varsity tennis team had a strong showing against New London-Spicer on April 23, defeating the Wildcats solidly, 5-2. On April 27, the White Hawks fell 7-0 to a strong Chanhassen team at home.
