Westonka Launches White Hawks Community Award--
To Recognize Dedicated Volunteers
|

The Westonka School District is launching a new award to recognize some of the many dedicated volunteers in our school community. Beginning in 2015, the District each year will present up to three Westonka White Hawks Community Awards to recognize outstanding service and commitment to Westonka students and the district.
The community members recognized are leaders in positively impacting the lives and experiences of students and their families and advancing the mission and vision of the school district.

For Minnesota Teacher of the Year
|
Education Minnesota recently announced that four Westonka School District teachers are among the 123 candidates for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
Representing each of the district's school buildings, Westonka's Teacher of the Year candidates were nominated by their colleagues for their exceptional commitment to student learning.

Second Quarter Distinguished Students--
Honored at MWHS
|
Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the second quarter of the 2014-2015 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student Breakfasts at the high school Feb. 5 and 6.

Professional Trumpeter Lazarus--
Wows MWHS Band Students
|
Mound Westonka High School band students had the unique opportunity to make music alongside professional trumpet player Charles Lazarus on Feb. 9. Lazarus worked with the MWHS Jazz Band before school, gave a presentation to all band students in the theater and then worked and played with the Wind Ensemble during class.

Westonka Advances 21 Students--
To State Future Problem Solving Competition
|
Four teams and three individuals from Grandview Middle School, as well as two Mound Westonka High School students, have qualified for the state Future Problem Solving competition.

MWHS Musicians Join All-State Choir--
For Valentine's Day Performance
|
Mound Westonka High School seniors Hogan Kelly and Matthew Sheehan will perform in the All-State Mixed Choir during the Minnesota Music Educators Association Midwinter Clinic.
The performance will take place on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.

Junior Hawkettes Dance Camp--
And Dance Spectacular
|
Students in grades K-7 are once again invited to participate in the Junior Hawkettes Dance Camp.
The camp, which is now in its 13th year, will be held after school Feb. 23-26 in the Mound Westonka High School cafeteria. Participants will learn basic dance technique and a dance routine from MWHS Hawkettes dance team members.

Trap team recruits for upcoming season
The Westonka trap team will be starting its spring season soon, and Head Coach Jeff Hanratty is hoping to recruit new members, especially girls.

Mound Westonka High School juniors Anson Kuznik, CJ Hoffman and Sam Abegglen competed in the Minnesota State High School League alpine and Nordic ski state meets Feb. 11 and 12.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling team completed a busy week to end the regular season by claiming a runner-up finish at their home Leopold Haglund Invitational on Feb. 6.

Girls Hockey Earns Huge OT Win in Season Finale
In front of a packed arena on Jan. 31, celebrating senior night and ending the season with aplomb, the Westonka girls hockey team came out with an outstanding effort and win over favored New Prague.

Vote Gabe Wear for ASPIRE Athlete of the Week
White Hawks boys basketball senior captain Gabe Wear is a top five semi-finalist for the 21st week of the 2014-2015 ASPIRE Athlete of the Week program. Online voting, which opens Sunday, will determine the winner.

Seniors Step Up Big in Boys Basketball Wins
With White Hawks junior captain Jordan Jensen out with a fractured finger, seniors Gabe Wear (27 points) and Michael Abegglen (11 points) stepped up big to get a home conference win over the Dassel-Cokato Chargers.

Boys Hockey Gets Wins at Home, On the Road
The first week in February was an important one for the White Hawks boys hockey team, beginning with a conference matchup at home against the Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Dragons on Feb. 3 and ending with a non-conference game in New Ulm on Feb. 7.

JV Players Bring Intensity to Varsity Court
The White Hawks girls basketball team played with a different strategy at Dassel-Cokato on Feb. 5. Coach Ray Finley alternated the varsity lineup with a full line of five JV players.
