Westonka DECA Continues Tradition of Excellence--
110 Students Headed to State
Westonka is advancing 110 students to the state DECA competition, following an exemplary showing at the District Three DECA Conference Jan. 10 at Minnetonka High School.

Westonka placed Top 12 in 36 of their 38 events and Top 3 in 28 events, with 16 first-place, 17 second-place and 15 third-place honors. 

DECA advisor Sue Simonson said, "We are so proud of how the students performed!"

What Floats Your Boat?--
Students Compete in MWHS Engineering Regatta
To sink or not to sink, that was the question for Mound Westonka High School engineering students during the First Annual MWHS Engineering Regatta Jan. 13. 

Project Lead the Way engineering students were challenged to create seaworthy vessels using principles of engineering and design. Each team had one week to design, document and build a boat that could carry at least two people from one end of the high school pool to the other, following strict construction guidelines.

MWHS Musicians Join 'Dream Team'--
At Conference Music Festival
Fifteen Mound Westonka High School band and choir students were chosen to participate in the Fourth Annual Wright County Conference Honor Band and Honor Choir Festival Jan. 10 at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School. Students from 12 school districts were selected for the event, which featured some of the top music students in the conference.

Hilltop Turns the Big Five-O--
Celebrates with All-School Birthday Party
Current and former members of the Hilltop Primary School community came together to celebrate the school's 50th anniversary last month. 

During an all-school "birthday party" Dec. 19, Hilltop students took a journey through their school's 50-year history.

Brustad, Levens to Represent MWHS--
In Triple 'A' Competition
Seniors Timothy Levens and Abby Brustad have been selected to represent Mound Westonka High School at the regional Triple "A" Awards banquet on Feb. 8 at Gustavus Adolphus College. 

Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, the Triple "A" Award--Academics, Arts and Athletics--is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts.

Junior Rotarians at MWHS--
Practice 'Service Above Self'
In its first year of operation, the Rotary Interact Club at Mound Westonka High School is bringing dedicated high school students together with local business leaders to exchange ideas, build relationships and serve the community.

Over 150 toys, games and gifts were collected for Children's Hospital during the club's Giving Tree drive in December.

Shirley Hills Collects Pennies for Patients--
And You Can Help!
Shirley Hills Primary School kicked off Caring for Our Community month on Jan. 12. Throughout January, the school will be raising awareness and money for Pennies for Patients to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Students Create Vision for the Future--
Of the MWHS Band Program
Mound Westonka High School band students, along with director Gretchen Chilson, participated in a day-long leadership workshop on Jan. 9. The MWHS Band Boosters sponsored nationally-known leadership/motivational speaker Alan Feirer, who met with students who were interested in being student leaders in band.

The Westonka Pop Singers are excited to announce their upcoming winter show, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, at the Mound Westonka High School Theater.

Provides Fun for All!
Shirley Hills Primary School invites the Westonka community to participate in one of the school's biggest fundraisers of the year! The Shirley Hills Carnival and Silent Auction will take place Friday, Jan. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Kwin Retterath, 17, recently earned the highest advancement award possible in the Boy Scouts, the rank of Eagle Scout.

White Hawks Top Dragons in OT

The Mound Westonka High School boys basketball team defeated Litchfield 54-50 in an overtime conference matchup on Jan. 9. Junior Jordan Jensen led all scorers. Jensen hit four 3-pointers in the first half, en route to 14 points total.

Boys Hockey Drops Games to Ranked Teams

The Mound Westonka High School boys hockey team took it on the chin last week, playing 14th-ranked conference rival Orono and 19th-ranked section foe Blake.

Abegglen Leads Skiers in Conference Races 

Mound Westonka High School Nordic ski captain junior Sam Abegglen has been dominating in conference competition. After placing first in the 5k skate race last week, Abegglen won this week's classic race by over a minute.

First Place Hawkettes Win Conference Jazz Meet

The Mound Westonka High School Hawkettes dance team placed first in both the varsity and JV divisions at the Wright County Conference Jazz Meet on Jan. 12.

Wrestlers Claim Runner-Up Title at Hibbing Duals

The Mound Westonka wrestling squad went 3-1 for a second-place finish at the Hibbing Duals Jan. 9 and 10. The White Hawks opened with a huge 73-6 win over Nashwauk-Keewatin Greenway in the first round, then stormed past Walker Hackensack Akeley Nevis 45-24.
