DECA Students 'Make it Count' at Internationals--
Battis, Locker Earn Second-Place Trophy
Mound Westonka High School had 23 competitors--the most from any Minnesota school--at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta May 3-6. 
 
Out of 16,000 U.S. and foreign DECA competitors, six of the 10 MWHS teams placed in the Top 20, coming away with three Top-10 honors and a second-place International trophy.
 
Creativity on Display--
At Hilltop's Imagination Celebration
On the evening of May 8, visitors to Hilltop Primary School plunged into the depths of students' imaginations. Held once every three years, Hilltop's Imagination Celebration showcased a wide range of creative works.
 
Artwork was displayed in the hallways and classrooms, transforming the school into a magical gallery. The event also featured a talent show, a silent auction, a book fair, a spaghetti dinner and more.
 
Class of 2014 Athletic Standouts--
Celebrate Achievements
Mound Westonka High School celebrated standout athletes from the 2014 graduating class at the Yost/Haddorff/Leopold Athletic Recognition Banquet May 14 at the Gillespie Center in Mound.
 
The event recognized this year's Athena and Yost/Haddorff/Leopold award winners--Scott Harrison, Courtney Cashman and Bryan Tierney--as well as 19 senior three-sport athletes.
 
Westonka Summer Institute--
Prepares for Fourth Trip to China
Westonka Summer Institute, the district's credit-bearing immersion program, will return to China for the fourth time this summer. During their trip, which runs June 1-11, 12 Mound Westonka High School students will learn about the global economy, explore Chinese history and culture and gain perspectives on China's role in the world market. 
 
For the first time, WSI students will also have opportunities to meet with expatriates living in Shanghai and working for Cargill and to visit Westonka's sister school, Beijing Middle School No. 7.
 
Food Truck Craze Hits Westonka--
Food Service Staff Gets Special Training
Minnesota's food truck craze hit the Westonka School District this week; but the truck that stopped by Mound Westonka High School on Monday, May 12 was not your average food truck.

 

Westonka Food and Nutrition Services staff members received hands-on training from professionals from North Star Agency, an independent firm specializing in commercial restaurant and food service equipment.
 
Hilltop Honored at State Capitol--
For Positive Character Development
Hilltop Primary School was presented with a Promising Practices Award by Synergy & Leadership Exchange at the Minnesota State Capitol on May 14. 
 

The Minnesota Promising Practices awards recognize schools that have developed and implemented practices promoting character development.  

 
Eat Your Fill--
In Support of Westonka Football

The First Annual Mound Westonka Football All-You-Can-Eat Belgian Waffles Breakfast Fundraiser will be held on this Sunday, May 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Grandview Middle School cafeteria. 

 

The fundraiser will help pay for a new storage shed at the practice fields behind the high school.

Boys Tennis Ends Busy Week--  

With Championship Trophy

The MWHS boys tennis team had a busy and successful week, ending at 5-1 and earning the championship trophy in the St. James Tournament. The White Hawks are currently ranked eighth in Class A. Sophomore Luke Moorhead and senior Arend Turner are ranked second and third, respectively, as individuals.

White Hawks Baseball Strikes Out-- 

Three Losses to Tough Competition

The Mound Westonka High School varsity baseball team lost all three of its games last week, despite playing some of its best baseball of the season. Next week, the White Hawks travel to Annandale on Monday, May 19 and host Rockford on Tuesday, May 20 in the last game of the regular season. Friday, May 23 is the Sub Section opener.
