Westonka's Middle School Musicians--
Perform in Solo-Ensemble Contest
Grandview Middle School instrumentalists in grades 5-7, as well as eighth-graders from Mound Westonka High School, competed in the West Metro Middle Level Solo and Ensemble Festival April 12 at Maple Grove Junior High School. Westonka students performed a total of 30 solos, duets and trios.
 
Pair of White Hawks Athletes--
Commit to College Sports Careers
Two Mound Westonka High School seniors, Kayla Anderson and Bryan Tierney, have committed to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level next year. Anderson will be playing NCAA Division II volleyball at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C., and Tierney will be playing Division III football at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
 
Both athletes were recognized at a special ceremony April 22 in the MWHS Little Theater.
 
Congressional Exhibit Features 10 MWHS Artists--
Koch Earns Grand Prize, Washington Trip
On April 21, U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen announced that Mound Westonka High School senior Carly Koch was the Grand Prize winner of the 2014 Third Congressional District High School Art Competition. Koch's drawing, "The Great Northern Loon," will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. for the upcoming year.

 

Ten MWHS students were selected to exhibit their artwork in this year's competition. Junior Karlie Wagner's photograph, "The Weather Can't Stop Us," took home first place, and junior Torii Nelson earned Honorable Mention.

To the Shirley Hills Carnival!
Join Shirley Hills Primary School for the annual Spring Carnival tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This fun-filled family event includes food, carnival games, bounce houses, a raffle and a tremendous silent auction.
 
Mound Westonka Jazz Band Competes--
In Region 2AA Contest
The Mound Westonka High School 19-member jazz band performed April 14 at the 2014 Region 2AA Jazz Band Contest at Hutchinson High School. The band performed "Southside Shuffle," "When I Fall in Love" and "Cafe Caliente."
 
"It's hard to believe that only seven years ago, we didn't have a jazz band program here at MWHS," said director Gretchen Chilson. "Now the program is growing and thriving. I'm proud to work with such a dedicated, hard-working and fun group of students."  

 

Wheels 4 Meals Bicycle Pledge Ride--
Slated for May 17
Westonka students, families and staff are invited to kick off spring with a bike ride on the Dakota Trail to support Meals on Wheels on Saturday, May 17. Along the route, riders will find water, goodies, handouts and educational info. They can also win prizes at the end of the ride, including two new bikes and prizes from local businesses.

 

Westonka Congratulates Sherry Timp--
Lord Fletcher's April Feature Teacher

Hilltop Primary School is proud to recognize third-grade teacher Sherry Timp as the Lord Fletcher's Feature Teacher for April. Timp has spent her entire 21-year teaching career at Westonka.

 

"Throughout the years, [Sherry] has been a wonderful leader in our technology initiative at Hilltop," said Hilltop Principal Nancy Benz. "Sherry has provided staff development to other colleagues in the school and has found valuable ways to personalize learning for the students."

White Hawks Snatch Extra-Inning Win--

Defeat Spartans 7-6

The Mound Westonka High School varsity baseball team fought back from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Orono 7-6 in extra innings on April 21. The White Hawks tied the score at 6 in the top of the seventh inning and scored in the top of the eighth to defeat the Spartans on their home field in Wright County Conference play.

Boys Tennis Wins Nailbiter--

Over Conference Rival Holy Family

In a close match with conference rival Holy Family on April 22, the White Hawks boys tennis team prevailed with a 4-3 win. The game came down to a tough match at No. 2 doubles, in which juniors Zach Martin and Timmy Levens came away with the victory.
