Westonka Educator Wins Top Teacher Award--

 Hilltop Primary School second-grade teacher Mara Drill received the first KMSP FOX 9 Top Teacher Award of 2014. Dawn Stevens of FOX 9 News surprised Drill with the award at a school-wide assembly on March 28. Drill received $900 from Royal Credit Union for classroom supplies, a Subway sandwich party and a special award.

All-Around Athlete Courtney Cashman--
Is 2014 Athena Award Winner
|
 Senior Courtney Cashman has been named the 2014 Mound Westonka High School Athena Award recipient. Candidates for this "outstanding female athlete" award must demonstrate excellence in individual or group sports.
Cashman will represent MWHS at the 42nd annual Athena Awards luncheon to be held May 2 in Minneapolis. She will be one of 53 outstanding senior women honored from public and private high schools in the greater Minneapolis area.

Westonka Schools Stuff the Bus--
For Westonka Food Shelf

Students in the Westonka School District loaded over 15,000 pounds of food and other items onto a school bus March 28 during a "Stuff the Bus" event to benefit the Westonka Food Shelf. Each school participated in a food drive during March, which culminated last Friday, when a bus traveled to each school to collect the donations.
Minnesota Vikings player Larry Dean, a member of the special teams unit, was on hand to help with the collection. Nordy, the official mascot of the Minnesota Wild, also made an appearance.

'Tease Your Hair, Not Your Friends'--
Grandview Takes a Comb to Bullying

Grandview Middle School students took up an anti-bullying challenge last month: "Tease Your Hair, Not Your Friends." On March 28, Grandview students, teachers and staff teased their hair or wore crazy hairstyles to school to draw attention to relational aggression.

Grandview Problem Solvers--
Compete at State Bowl
|
A total of 14 Grandview Middle School sixth-graders competed in the Future Problem Solvers State Bowl on March 29. Special recognition goes to Anders Erdahl, who placed first in the Junior Individual Competition to earn a trip to Internationals in June.
Also placing at state were Robby Brustad, who took third in the Junior Individual Competition, and Samantha Kruichak, who competed with three students from other schools and placed second in the Alternate Competition.

Local Girl Scout Troop Delivers Cookies--
To Westonka Food Shelf, Military
|
Girl Scout Troop 10977, a combined troop of Westonka and Orono students in grades 7-9, donated boxes of their famous cookies to a pair of worthwhile organizations during the month of March. The troop collected enough donations from door-to-door sales and cookie booths to give 74 boxes of cookies to the Westonka Food Shelf and the U.S. military.

Westonka Athletes Bring Home Gold--
In Special Olympics State Tournament
Westonka athletes celebrated a gold medal victory at the Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament March 28-30. Mound Westonka High School eighth-grader David Eastman and freshman Sienna Hackbarth competed for the West Metro Warriors, along with former Westonka student freshman Aaron Perez.
