Westonka Facilites Update--
Preparing for Summer 2014 Projects

Following successful bid openings this winter, the Westonka School District enters the final phase of referendum bond projects approved by voters in November 2011. Major construction will take place at Grandview Middle School and at Hilltop Primary School this summer.

'The Odd Couple'--
Marks Final Performance for MWHS Seniors

The Mound Westonka High School Theater Department put on four performances of the female version of The Odd Couple March 6-9 in the high school theater. For seniors Nate Barnes, Lily Frenette, Eloise Montgomery and Shelby Stahl, it was the final show of their MWHS theatrical careers.

 
Madd Jazz Competes to Perform National Anthem--
Live at Target Field

Westonka's auditioned vocal group, Madd Jazz, was selected to perform at the Live at Target Field 2014 National Anthem Finals on Sunday, March 23.

 

Winners of the competition (to be announced within the next 30 days) will perform the National Anthem at a home Twins game this season.  

 

MWHS Jazz Band--
Performs at Lamberton Festival

On Tuesday, March 25, the Mound Westonka High School Jazz Band traveled to Lamberton, Minn., for the 40th Annual Lamberton Jazz Festival. Twelve Minnesota bands participated in the educational festival, where the MWHS band performed three tunes in three varying styles.

 
Westonka Congratulates Brenda Hoogeveen--
Lord Fletcher's March Feature Teacher

Grandview Middle School is proud to name fifth-grade teacher Brenda Hoogeveen as the Lord Fletcher's Feature Teacher for March.

 

"Brenda is so committed to creating a classroom experience that is engaging for all of her students," Grandview Principal Christy Zachow said. "She uses a variety of technological applications to reinforce skills and help students to be creative and showcase their work."

 
Community Forum on Marijuana--
A Timely Discussion
 
 
The marijuana landscape has changed drastically in recent years. To provide information and encourage discussion on the topic of marijuana, the Our Lake Community coalition will present the public forum Marijuana: A Timely Discussion on Thursday, April 3.

Parents, teachers/staff, students and community members are invited to come learn about marijuana today--the drug, the users, the science and the politics. An overview of these issues, delivered by Carol Falkowski, Minnesota's foremost expert on drug abuse, will be followed by question and answer session and discussion.
 
Annual Early Childhood Kids' Stuff Sale--
April 12 at Thaler Arena
The Westonka Early Childhood program is once again holding its spring Kids' Stuff Sale. 
 
Now in its 19th year, this community-wide fundraiser will be held at David M. Thaler Arena (new location) on Saturday, April 12 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Westonka alpine ski coach Scott Smiley has been named the Minnesota State High School Alpine Ski Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year for 2013-2014.

Boys Basketball Captain O'Hara--

Earns Academic All-State Honors

Mound Westonka High School senior captain Tynan O'Hara was among the 21 Class AAA and AAAA young men selected to the 2013-2014 Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Team. O'Hara led the White Hawks in both points and rebounds this season. He will be attending the University of Minnesota next year.
