Westonka Moves Forward--
With Edge21 Technology Plan
Staff Kevin Borg Superintendent It's been one year since the Westonka School Board approved the comprehensive Edge21 Technology Plan for our district, and what a transformative year it has been!
 
The first phase of our three-year Edge21 1:1 device rollout is now complete, with grades 5 and 8 now 1:1 with Google Chromebooks. Additionally, each Westonka fourth-grader now has an iPad to use during the school day. 
 
On the Feb. 14 workshop day, Westonka licensed staff enjoyed eye-opening presentations by Eric Sheninger, the current principal at New Milford High School in Bergen County, N.J, and by Meg Ormiston, a professional who specializes in transforming teaching and student learning through the power of digital tools.

MWHS Choirs Are Superior--
In Regional Group Contest
 
The Mound Westonka High School Varsity Women's Choir and Concert Choir each earned Superior ratings in the Region 2AA Large Group Choir Contest at Dassel-Cokato High School on Feb. 24. "I'm thrilled to say that both Mound Westonka choirs received Superior ratings from all three judges!" said choir director Kate Larson.
 
MWHS Theater Presents--
Female Version of  'The Odd Couple'
The Mound Westonka High School Theater Department will present the female version of "The Odd Couple" March 6-9 in the high school theater. Performances will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on March 6-8 and at 2 p.m. on March 9.
 
"We are really excited to bring laughs to the stage this spring with this delightful classic with a little bit of a twist!" said assistant director Meagan Anderson. "We were able to double cast our lead roles and our male roles to showcase even more of our talented students."  
 
Westonka SEAC Hosts Family Open Gym--
For Children with Special Needs
The Westonka Special Education Advisory Council hosted an open gym time for families of children with special needs at Grandview Middle School on Feb. 23. 
 
The event featured bounce houses, basketball and more family fun activities. Parents had an opportunity to meet and converse while their children played. 
 
Battis Wins State ExCEL Award--
For Excellence in Community, Education & Leadership
Mound Westonka High School junior Nick Battis has been awarded the Minnesota State High School League's ExCEL Award for 2014. 

ExCEL stands for Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership. The annual award recognizes high school juniors who are active in fine arts and athletic activities, who show leadership qualities and who are model citizens in their communities. Battis was one of the 32 boys and girls selected from across the state to join this elite club. 
 
MWHS Names Distinguished Students--
For Second Quarter
award-banner.gif A total of 23 Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the second quarter of the 2013-2014 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student breakfasts at the high school on Feb. 6 and 7.
 
Westonka Presents Parent Discussion Night--
'When Kids Push Your Buttons'
Licensed parent educator Sue Forster will present a special discussion night, When Kids Push Your Buttons, on Thursday, March 6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Early Childhood Center.
 
This session will explore anger triggers and typical reactions and will examine more effective coping skills based on Bonnie Harris's book, "When Your Kids Push Your Buttons."
 
Longtime Westonka Coach--
Joins Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame
Longtime Mound Westonka hockey coach Pat Furlong is one of five 2014 inductees in the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Furlong has coached in over 1,000 hockey games in his career, which began at Mound High School in 1967. He spent 35 years coaching for the Mohawks/White Hawks, 25 years with the boys program and 10 with the girls program.

Furlong will be recognized during a ceremony between the morning and afternoon sessions of the MSHSL Boys Hockey State Tournament on Thursday, March 6, at the RiverCentre Grand Ballroom. 
 
Community Forum on Relationship Abuse--
Recognizing and Ending Relationship Violence
A relationship that starts out happy and caring can turn into one marked by fear, control and violence. Abusive relationships can happen to anyone, regardless of age, socio-economic status, ethnicity, education or gender. 
 
The Our Lake Community coalition will present a public forum on Thursday, March 6 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Mound's Gillespie Center on the topic of Relationship Abuse: Recognizing and Ending Relationship Violence.

West metro wrestlers well-represented at state meet
Last weekend's Class 3A, Section 6 wrestling meets proved fruitful for west metro wrestlers.

White Hawks qualify eight wrestlers for state tournament
After losing to Willmar in the Section 6-3A championship match, the Mound Westonka wrestling program turned its attention last week to qualifying individuals for the state tournament. 

Former Mound Westonka teammates inducted into Hall of Fame
Former Mound graduates and teammates Kermit Dietrich and Roy Pierce were inducted into the Mound Westonka Wrestling Hall of Fame on Friday, Feb. 7.

MWHS art students' work chosen for Capitol display
A pair of upperclassmen artists, senior Carly Koch and junior Lily Durand, will have their artwork exhibited in Senator Dave Osmek's office at the State Capitol for the next couple of months.

White Hawks Send Record Eight to State--

Wrestling Team, Coaches Awarded

The White Hawks placed 11 out of 14 wrestlers at the Section 6AAA individual tournament and will send a record eight athletes to state. Head coach Todd Munsterteiger was named Section 6AAA Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Jake Saatzer was named Section Assistant Coach of the Year. The White Hawks also earned team and individual academic awards this season.

A Section Win, Then A Heartbreaking Loss--
Boys Hockey Season Ends
The boys hockey team started postseason play Feb. 18, defeating the Richfield Spartans 6-0 in the Section 2A playoffs. The win would pit the White Hawks against the number three seed, Bloomington Kennedy. In a hard-fought battle Feb. 21, the Eagles defeated the White Hawks, 2-0.

Mound Westonka Senior Selected-- 

For Football All-Star Game

Mound Westonka High School senior football player Bryan Tierney was recently selected to play in the 2014 Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game, which will take place on Saturday, June 28, at St. Cloud State University Husky Stadium.

Two MWHS Gymnasts-- 

Compete at State

Mound Westonka High School seniors Alex Bebeau and Courtney Cashman returned to the state gymnastics tournament after impressive performances at the Feb. 14 section meet. "These two have led this team since their early high school years," coach Danielle Jonsgaard said. "We are very proud of their success and that they were able to end their careers at the state tournament."
