Revised District Budget Approved--
Board Plans Annual Budget Adjustments

Staff Kevin Borg SuperintendentOn Jan. 27, the Westonka School Board approved the revised 2013-2014 budget and reviewed a projection for next year's budget. Please read the Borg Report for details on our current financial position and for information on annual budget adjustments.

 

Our current strong finances allow us to continue providing the high-quality education, programs and services that our students, staff and community expect and deserve.

 
Board Approves Make-Up Days--
For Recent Cancellations
Given the recent school cancellations, the Westonka School Board approved on Monday evening modifications to the school year calendar to make up for lost student learning time.

 

In order to increase instructional time for students, classes will now be in session at all Westonka schools on the following dates:
  • Friday, Feb. 28, which was previously scheduled as a parent conference day
  • Friday, May 9, which was previously scheduled as a teacher workshop day
Pair of Busy Seniors--
Earn Triple 'A' Awards
Seniors Scott Harrison and Katie Linder will represent Mound Westonka High School at the regional Triple "A" Award banquet at Gustavus Adolphus College on Feb. 9. 
 
Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), the Triple "A" Award--Academics, Arts and Athletics--is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts.
 
MWHS Musicians Chosen--
For U of M Honor Band
Four members of the Mound Westonka High School Wind Ensemble participated in the 20th Annual University of Minnesota High School Honor Band in January. Seniors Hanna Brustad (flute), Elle Montgomery (baritone) and Leah Pinault (flute), along with junior Kristina Hayhurst (clarinet), were chosen for the select group.
 
Nine Scholastic Art Awards--
For MWHS Artists
Mound Westonka High School art students represented the district well at the 2014 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards. 
 
Senior Carly Koch was honored with a Gold Key Award for her drawing, "Melancholy." Seniors Ryan Flesher and Trevor Omann earned Silver Key Awards for their artworks, and six MWHS students earned Honorable Mention Awards.
 
MWHS to Host Regional Band Contest--
Featuring Over 400 Student Musicians
Mound Westonka High School will host the Region 2AA Large Group Instrumental Contest on Monday, Feb. 10, from 3 to 8 p.m. Nine bands from Orono, Dassel-Cokato, Buffalo and Delano will join the MWHS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble for a full afternoon and evening of performances. 
 
Prairie Fire Theatre to Present 'Beauty and the Beast'--
Join the Cast or Enjoy the Show!
Join Westonka Community Education and Services and Prairie Fire Children's Theatre for another theater residency. Children and adults alike are invited to participate in "Beauty and the Beast."

Auditions will be held Monday, Feb. 3 from 5-7 p.m. at the Grandview Middle School cafeteria and are open to anyone ages seven to adult. 
 
Performances of "Beauty and the Beast" will be Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m.
 
ECFE to Host Family Concert Event--
Featuring 'Tricia & the Toonies'
Westonka Early Childhood Family Education invites families to a special event on Saturday, Feb. 1, featuring "Tricia & the Toonies." 
 
The concert event will include a mixture of music, puppets, skits and laughter. Age-appropriate activities, crafts, food and family photos will also be part of the event, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Shirley Hills Primary School. No pre-registration is required. The fee is $5 per family at the door, but no one will be turned away for inability to pay. For questions, call (952) 491-8048.

Girls basketball has tough losses, 2-5 in WCC

The Mound Westonka girls basketball team took tough losses in the last week of play. On Friday, Jan. 18, the girls fell to Dassel-Cokato 56-41.

Alpine Skiers Enjoy Success--

At January Invites

The Westonka Alpine Ski Team enjoyed continued success this month. On Jan. 17, MWHS senior Willie Maahs earned a first-place finish at the River Bluff Invitational in Mankato. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, freshman Delaney Johnson finished with a strong fourth-place medal in the first ever MSHSL-sanctioned duals event in high school Alpine racing

White Hawks Wrestlers Win Big--

In Front of Large Crowd

The White Hawks wrestling team won two more duals the week of Jan. 20, defeating conference rival Glencoe-Silver Lake 41-29 and downing section opponent Hopkins 53-12. It was Senior Night, Link Night and TakeDown Cancer Night Jan. 24 when the White Hawks faced the Hopkins Royals at home.

Boys Hockey Goes 1-1--

Week of Jan. 20

The White Hawks boys hockey team sustained a disappointing 5-0 loss to Orono on Jan. 21. On Jan. 25, the tables turned as the White Hawks traveled to Litchfield and came away with a 5-0 victory.

Conference Meet is 'Magical Day'--

For Westonka Nordic Skiers

The Mound Westonka Nordic Ski Team competed in the Twin Cities Nordic Ski Conference meet on Jan. 24 at Baker Park Reserve. "In a winter of frigid weather, our conference meet was a magical day for ski racing," said head coach Sue Harrison.
