108 Going to State!--
MWHS DECA Club Dominates at Districts

Mound Westonka High School will send 108 students to the state DECA competition, following a successful showing at the DECA District Conference Jan. 11 at Minnetonka High School. Sixty-three students advanced in two events and 12 of those advanced in three events.

 

Two MWHS seniors advancing to state also had the opportunity to present their DECA project at the Minnesota School Boards Association's annual Leadership Conference on Jan. 16. Courtney Simonson and Alex Riffle presented their project, "170 Days of MWHS Pride," at the conference's Show and Tell event, which highlights some of the state's most unique and outstanding programs in education.

 
Battis, Mazurek to Represent MWHS--
In ExCEL Program

Juniors Nick Battis and Jori Mazurek have been selected as the Mound Westonka High School recipients of Minnesota State High School League's ExCEL Award.

 

ExCEL--Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership--is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for the state's high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities and who are model citizens.

 
State Rep. Cindy Pugh--
Visits Grandview History Class
   
State Rep. Cindy Pugh visited Grandview Middle School sixth-graders in Jessica Rashleger's history class Jan. 16 to personally deliver her responses to letters the students sent to her. Pugh, who represents District 33B in the Minnesota House of Representatives, said she was "thrilled" to visit the students.
 
"I was extremely impressed with your letters," Pugh told the students. "I really enjoyed reading all of them, and I brought a response for each of you."
 
MWHS to Celebrate SnoDaze--
With Dodgeball and Dancing
The week-long SnoDaze celebration will be held at Mound Westonka High School beginning Monday, Jan. 27. The week will feature dress-up days and the Feb. 1 SnoDaze Dance, as well as the 10th and final year of the Student Senate Dodgeball Tournament.
 
Monday: College/Comfy Day
Tuesday: Camo/Blaze Orange Day
Wednesday: Dress Like a Dodgeball Player Day
Thursday: Cowboy vs. City Slicker Day
Friday: Black Out Day (dress all in black)
 
Former Wrestlers Hopkins, Thompson--
Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Former Mound Westonka wrestlers Jason Hopkins and Jeremy Thompson were inducted into the Mound Westonka Wrestling Hall of Fame on Jan. 16 at Mound Westonka High School.

 

Hockey Against Hunger--
Is a Big Score for Westonka Food Shelf

The White Hawks boys and girls hockey teams are holding their annual Hockey Against Hunger food drive to help stock the Westonka Food Shelf. Anyone donating a non-perishable food shelf item will receive $1 off the price of admission to the Saturday, Feb. 1 hockey games at Thaler Sports Center.

 

The boys team will host New Ulm, with the JV playing at 1 p.m and the varsity playing at 3 p.m. Senior team members will be honored between the JV and varsity games. The girls varsity team will play Totino-Grace at 5:15 p.m.

Marking a milestone for White Hawks girls basketball
Two Mound Westonka girls basketball players made school history on Friday, Jan. 10, by hitting the 1,000 point scoring mark in their careers.

OMW swim and dive boys compete separately
The Orono Mound Westonka boys swim and dive team lost an away meet against the larger, healthier Bison of Buffalo Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Spotlight Shines on MWHS musical
The cast of Mound Westonka High School's fall musical "Copacabana" were honored with several awards from the Hennepin Theatre Trust SpotLight Musical Theatre Program.

White Hawks Skate with the varsity
The White Hawks boys varsity and JV hockey teams hosted a "Skate with the Varsity" event held  Saturday, Jan. 11, at Thaler Arena.

White Hawk wrestlers win two more duals, place fourth in Minnetonka tourney
The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestlers traveled to Waconia on Thursday, Jan. 9, and picked up two more victories in a triangular meet with Waconia and St. Peter.

Spartans tie White Hawks in hockey action
The first of two consecutive games against the Mound Westonka White Hawks ended in a tie.

Tierney Gets 100th Win

The White Hawks wrestling squad won three duals last week, including a huge upset win over Hutchinson, which is currently ranked third in the state in Class AA. It was a doubly sweet night for senior Bryan Tierney, as he also earned the 100th victory of his career.

Boys Hockey Team Gets Big W--

Against Waconia Wildcats

After three straight losses, the White Hawks boys hockey team was in need of a win, and they got one in a big, inspired performance against Waconia Jan. 16. They defeated the Wildcats 7-1, getting an important conference win.
