School Board Approves Bids--
For Summer Construction 

Staff Kevin Borg Superintendent

Following successful bid openings on April 9 and 16, bidding is now complete for the 2013 Shirley Hills Primary School and Mound Westonka High School construction projects. The Westonka School Board approved the bids at the April 22 meeting.

 

Bid tabulations and contract award recommendation letters provided by Kraus-Anderson Construction Company can be found on the Facilities Update page of the district website, along with the most up-to-date information about the project.

 

Please remember that there will be no public access to Shirley Hills or MWHS during the construction process, May 31-Aug. 19.

Imagine That!--
Destination Imagination Qualifies for Globals

A creative team of Mound Westonka High School sophomores has qualified for the Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville, Tenn. May 22-25. 

 

The seven-member team, called The System, took first place by over 100 points in the secondary level at the Destination Imagination State Tournament on April 20.

 

All three of Westonka's Destination Imagination teams advanced to state after each earning first place at the Feb. 23 regional tournament

For ECFE Kids' Stuff Sale
Close to 500 shoppers braved a cold April morning in search of good bargains at the 18th Annual Westonka Early Childhood Kids' Stuff Sale on April 20. 
 
Over $5,500 was raised for preschool scholarships, field trips and classroom materials.  

 

Westonka Artists Earn Medals--
At Section Visual Arts Festival
Seven talented artists represented Mound Westonka High School at the Section 2AA Visual Arts Festival held at Hutchinson High School on April 20. 
 
MWHS came away with six Superior and three Excellent ratings.

 

Market Masters--
MWHS Sweeps Stock Market Game
It was a clean sweep for Mound Westonka High School in the spring Stock Market Game. A total of 540 teams competed in the regional competition this year, and teams of seniors from MWHS took the top three spots, as well as fourth and sixth place.

MWHS Delegates Chosen by American Legion--
For Boys and Girls State Convention
 
Four Mound Westonka High School junior boys and three junior girls have been selected by the Mound American Legion Post and Auxiliary to represent the Westonka community at the annual Boys and Girls State Conventions. 
 
Headed for Boys State June 9-15 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall are John Byers, Matt Hejna, Willie Maahs and Trevor Omann. Girls State will take place the same week at Bethel University in Arden Hills, with Lily Frenette, Carly Koch and Emily Minzel representing the community. 

 

Westonka Congratulates Melissa Bray--
Lord Fletcher's April Feature Teacher

Congratulations to Melissa Bray, the April Lord Fletcher's Feature Teacher. Bray is a music teacher at Shirley Hills Primary School. 

  

"[Bray] teaches the students so much more than just music," Shirley Hills Principal Ann Swanson said. "She teaches the students to have a passion and love for music, manners, great posture and self-esteem." 

 

National Honor Society--
Welcomes New Members

A total of 42 Mound Westonka High School students were inducted into the National Honor Society at a special ceremony April 21. 

 

Another 32 seniors, who were inducted into the program last year, were also on hand for special recognition.

Boys Tennis Emerges from Long Winter--
With Season's First Win

After four weeks of snowstorms, rain and chilly weather--which caused all matches and tournaments to be postponed or cancelled--the MWHS boys tennis team competed in its first match of the season on April 24. The White Hawks faced the Delano Tigers on their home courts and came away with their first win of the season.
