Westonka Archery Program--
Right on Target
|
A total of 515 young archers gathered at Mound Westonka High School on Feb. 9 to go for the bullseye at the annual Westonka Open archery tournament. More than 20 schools from across the state participated in the all-day event.
Westonka's archery program, now in its eighth year, provides students of all ages the opportunity to learn accountability and responsibility in a fun way. Over the years, the program has become one of the premier National Archery in the Schools Programs (NASP) in Minnesota and in the country.

Building a Healthier Community--
Chemical Use Forum to Provide Resources
|
An educational community forum held in Mound last November brought together drug experts and community leaders in an effort to increase awareness about chemical use in our community.
Parents, students and community members are invited to attend a second drug forum on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Mound's Gillespie Center.
This follow-up presentation will provide school district representatives, local law enforcement and recovery professionals the opportunity to share additional resources that can be used to build a healthier community.

A World of Pure Imagination--
On Display at Shirley Hills

Young scientists, artists, writers and researchers took center stage at the 19th Annual Shirley Hills Imagination Fair last week. Over 70 projects were presented by students in kindergarten through fourth grade at the Feb. 7 event, which was sponsored by the Shirley Hills PTA.
"The Shirley Hills Imagination Fair was a huge success," Principal Ann Swanson said. "The students did amazing work in all of the categories, making the job for the judges very difficult. I really enjoy this event because it is exciting to listen to the students talk about their passions, which included a broad range of interesting topics."

All-State Musicians--
To Perform at Bethel |
Two Mound Westonka High School Concert Choir students will complete their All-State Choir experience this weekend with a workshop and performance at the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) Mid-Winter Clinic.
Senior Monica Shukle, in her second year as an All-State Choir member, was selected for the mixed choir, while senior Maddy Isaacs, a first-year All-Stater, was chosen for the women's choir.
The choirs will give their final performances on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Benson Great Hall on the campus of Bethel College in St. Paul.

Westonka Musicians Share Love of Music--
All-District Band Concert |
Students from across the district will come together Sunday, Feb. 24, to share their love of music at the annual Mound Westonka All-District Band Concert.
"All of the students have been working on some great music for this show," band director Gretchen Chilson said.

Westonka SEAC Hosts Open Gym--
For Families of Children with Special Needs |
Westonka's Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) hosted an open gym event for families of children with special needs at Grandview Middle School on Feb. 9. The event featured a bounce house, basketball, hockey and other activities.
Parents had an opportunity to meet and converse while their children played, and a fun time was had by all!

MWHS Honors Students--
For Distinguished Work in Second Quarter |
A total of 24 Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the second quarter of the 2012-2013 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student Breakfasts at the high school Feb. 7 and 8.
 At the end of each quarter, teachers are asked to name a distinguished student in each broad subject area for each grade level. [Q2 Honors]

Girls Hockey Wins Section Championship--
Earns First Trip to State!
The MWHS girls hockey team will advance to its first state tournament after topping Mankato East/Loyola at Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday, Feb. 14. The state tournament will be held Feb. 20-23 at Xcel Energy Center and Ridder Arena.
Maahs Competes at State Alpine Meet--
Finishes 37th Overall
After placing 56th in the morning run, MWHS junior Willie Maahs turned up the volume on the second run and finished 37th overall at the State Alpine Championship on Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Boys Swim & Dive Team--
Seizes WCC Title for Third Year
For the third year, the OMW co-op boys swim and dive team earned the title of Wright County Conference Champion. The co-op team splits to compete in Class A Sections meet on Feb. 21 at Richfield as the two separate teams of Orono and Mound Westonka. [Conference Champs]  Girls Hockey With Decisive Win--

 Boys Hockey Defeats Hutch--
The White Hawks extended their win streak to six games with a 5-2 away victory over Hutchinson Feb. 12. They finish off the regular season this Friday, Feb. 15, in a home game against Waconia, and they hope to secure the No. 2 seed in the section.
Girls Basketball Loses Close Battle--
At Home Against Holy Family
On Feb. 12, the MWHS girls basketball team lost a close home battle to the Holy Family Fire. The White Hawks led going into half time but came away with a 70-75 loss. Their next game is this Friday, Feb. 15 at Litchfield.
Three White Hawks Alums-- Inducted into Wrestling Hall of Fame White Hawks alumni Charan Jackson, Ryan Breisch and Dan Bradley were inducted into the MWHS Wrestling Hall of Fame on Feb. 8, 2013.

Nordic Skiers Compete in Section Final-- Harrison Takes 11th at State The Westonka Nordic team competed in the section championship meet on Feb. 7. The boys team finished fifth out of 12 teams, and the girls finished 11th of 13. At the State Tournament on Feb. 14, MWHS junior Scott Harrison placed 11th of 119 skiers. [Section Skiers]
White Hawks Wrestlers-- End Regular Season The MWHS wrestling squad hosted the annual Leopold/Haglund Memorial Tournament Feb. 8. The White Hawks entered nine wrestlers in the tournament, with all contributing at least one win for a fifth-place finish.
