Westonka Students Vote--
Learn Democratic Process
A little over 100 Mound Westonka High School students turned 18 by Nov. 6, making them eligible to vote in the 2012 presidential election. But even Westonka students who couldn't share their opinions at the polls spent time learning about the democratic process this fall.

Shirley Hills Primary School students saw that their votes count during an all-school voting event on Election Day. Students cast ballots on important issues: their favorite color, food and animal!

Older Westonka students took a more active interest in the national political scene with an Election Night party at the high school.

District 277 Foundation Grants--
Benefit Westonka Students
The Westonka District 277 Foundation recently announced its grant
awards for the 2012-2013 school year. The six-member Board of Directors reviewed over 20 grant applications from Westonka staff members seeking funds to enrich their curriculum.

Fundraising is critical to the success of the Foundation, which has awarded more than $100,000 in grants since 1997.

Donna Smith and Margaret Holste, two board members with long ties to the district, interviewed applicants before making recommendations to the rest of the board.

Volunteers Come Out in Full Force--
To Help Feed Hurricane Sandy Victims
A total of 515 volunteers
participated in the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack at Mound Westonka High School Nov. 2 and 3. Together they packed 504 boxes of food for children in Haiti, or a total of 108,864 meals that will feed 298 children for an entire year.

The event was high-energy and a lot of fun, but the mission was made even more meaningful following the devastation in Haiti caused by Hurricane Sandy. MobilePack organizers continue to collect donations to help fight worldwide hunger.
