2011-2012 Annual Report--
Now Available Online

The Westonka Public Schools 2011-2012 "Annual Report on Curriculum, Instruction & Student Achievement" is now available online. The report features student achievement data, revenue and expenditures information and highlights of 2011-2012 results.
A hard copy of the report may be requested by calling 952.491.8007. Online availability of the accountability report saves about $3,000 in costs related to print distribution.

MWHS Welcomes Exchange Students--
Visitors Hail from Nine Different Countries
|
For 11 teenagers from nine different countries around the globe, the Westonka community will be home for the next several months. The exchange students came to Mound Westonka High School through the Youth for Understanding (YFU) program.

STRIVE Program Helps Students Thrive--

A group of Mound Westonka High School seniors learned about building a business from Paul Meisel, owner of Meisel Hardware Specialties, during a recent tour of his Spring Park facility.
The field trip was just one of the visits the students will make this year as part of the Mound Westonka Rotary's STRIVE Program. The program focuses on providing support and incentive for students to improve their academic achievement and to realize their goals for post-secondary education.

Educational Forum on Drug Abuse and Prevention--
Westonka Joins City Leaders to Increase Awareness
|

Last summer, police departments in the west metro alerted residents to increased heroin and prescription drug use in the area. In response to this disconcerting finding, city leaders from Minnetonka Beach, Minnetrista, Mound, Orono and Spring Park are coming together to host an educational forum for parents and community members on the topic of drug abuse and prevention.
The mayors of Orono, Spring Park and Mound will be joined by area police chiefs, Westonka Superintendent Kevin Borg, recovery professionals and other community leaders to discuss with residents the current trends in drug abuse and what parents need to know.
When: Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
Where: The Gillespie Center in Mound

Hilltop Octoberfest is Great Success-- Carnival Raises Over $20,000
|
Despite a cool, rainy day, hundreds of students, parents and community members attended the annual Octoberfest carnival at Hilltop Primary School on Oct. 13.
Proceeds from the carnival, which totaled over $20,000, will provide funds for a variety of activities throughout the year.

Westonka Congratulates Ali LaLonde-- Lord Fletcher's October Feature Teacher
|
The Westonka School District's Feature Teacher for October is Ali LaLonde, a special education teacher at Grandview Middle School.
LaLonde currently teaches small group language arts and math, seventh grade co-taught language arts and classes for students with cognitive disabilities. Outside the classroom, she is involved in various committees and groups dedicated to continuing education and to improving Westonka schools.
"Ali is exactly the teacher every principal loves to have," Grandview Principal Christine Zachow said. "She cares deeply about each and every student that she works with."

MWHS Senior Gets New Ride--
In Safe Driving Promotion
|
Despite a terrific turnout and tremendous community support, Mound Westonka High School did not win the $100,000 grant in the Celebrate My Drive™ promotion this fall. But one of the MWHS voting seniors, Joe Vertnik, was the lucky winner of a new car and a cash prize as part of the contest!
"We are excited for Joe and this really large prize," Assistant Principal Marty Fischer said. "A hearty thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to vote for Mound Westonka High School in our quest to win $100,000 from State Farm Insurance."

Mound coach reaches goals in men's Half-Marathon
25-year-old Seth Brickley of Mound can always have training partners ready when he needs one. As an assistant coach with the Mound Westonka cross country and track teams, he can make it part of their practices.
Sen. Al Franken visited Mound Westonka High School on Wednesday, Oct. 3 to speak with senior government students.
White Hawks boys take second at Rogers Invitational The White Hawks boys varsity cross country team was barely edged out for first place by Monticello High School at the Rogers Invite in St. Michael on Oct. 2.

MWHS tennis ends season in section tournament The MWHS girls tennis team finished their 2012 season with a tough finish at the individual Section 2AA tournament.
MWHS runners compete in conference championships
The Mound Westonka High School boys varsity finished near the front of the pack in the Wright County Conference, and four White Hawks runners received All-Conference honors.

Boys Soccer Season Finale-- 
Breck Defeats MWHS in Sections
Boys soccer advanced to the second round of the section tournament after defeating the co-op team from The International School of Minnesota and Eagle Ridge Academy. However, Breck ended the White Hawks' season with a 2-0 victory on Oct. 11.

Volleyball Completes Conference Play--
Prepares for Section Playoffs
The White Hawks completed their conference schedule with wins over Hutchinson and New London-Spicer. They used the Oct. 18 Sartell Tournament to prepare for post-season play, and they came away with their third tournament trophy of the season.

 Football Finds Victory in Defeat-- 'Tackle Cancer' Success Story The White Hawks lost their final home game 34-14 to Annandale Oct. 12. However, despite a loss on the field, the team had reason to celebrate. Mike Schulz, father of senior Jeremy Schulz, saw his first game in over a year after receiving a cancer-free diagnosis.

Upcoming Information Night
The Orono Mound Westonka (OMW) co-op boys swim and dive team prepares for its upcoming season with Winter Sports Night Nov. 5 at Orono High School. They seek to defend their WCC championship title this year.
