CCC Unveils New Coaching Leadership Structure Focused on Guiding Squad Back to Olympic Podium

Justin Wadsworth, who led Canada's cross-country athletes to record-setting results over the last four years will move into a head coaching leadership role with oversight of all of Canada's National Team ("NST") programs, including those based in National Team Development Centres. Wadsworth will be embedded day-to-day in the Alberta World Cup Academy ("AWCA"). Also acting as manager of CCC's Integrated Support Team ("IST"), he will align programming for NST (including world cup team) and development athletes.

Louis Bouchard will also continue as World Cup team coach and head coach of Centre National d'Entranement Pierre-Harvey ("CNEPH"). Bouchard will lead Alex Harvey and a very promising group of Quebec-based NST and development athletes.

CCC added further strength to its coaching team with accomplished Norwegian skier and coach, Tor-Arne Hetland. A two-time Olympic and five-time World Championship medalist, the new world cup team coach will collaborate with Wadsworth and Bouchard on team plans including training camps and daily training. He will be the point person in Europe, providing better continuity by being present and leading the team at all World Cup races, while liaising with coaches and IST in Canada.

Information & Documents

CCC-AltaGas High Performance logo - AltaGas Coaching Experience Program

Cross-Country Ski de fond Canada is now accepting applications for the 2014/15 High Performance Coaching Experience (HPCE) program. Please fill annex A and return by May 23rd.

The HPCE program provides developing coaches with a variety of practical training opportunities that can be delivered through the National Development Centers (NDC) and the NST programs. Coaches selected for this program will benefit from a wide range of opportunities like attending NST or NDC training camps, regular home base training sessions for up to a week long period and domestic or international race trips as well.

The primary aim of HPCE assignments is to enrich the overall system and to create a unified approach to high performance coaching within CCC . This goal will be achieved by providing selected developing coaches with national and international coaching opportunities, exposing them to coaching and technical practices consistent with LTAD principles currently employed within the NTDC and NST programs. The secondary aim is to supplement the technical support available on NTDC and NST camps, trips and competitions.

Fantastic Year for the Ski Fit North Alberta Program!
By: Beckie Scott

The 2013/14 season was a memorable year of 'firsts' for SFNA. With inclusion and equality as

two of our guiding principles, SFNA purchased it's first sit-ski; providing youth with a disability the opportunity to try cross-country skiing and participate in our outreach activities. We
also hosted, for the first-time ever, a hugely successful 5-Nation multi-community ski festival day. With Kikino school as our base, SFNA joined together with 5 different reserve schools for a day of skiing, activity, cultural sharing, community building and fun.

CCC Primary LogoSkill Development Camps

What is a CCC Skill Development Camp?

A CCC Skill Development Camp is an integral part of a progressive club athlete development system. Camps can help children learn ski related technical skills, teamwork, self reliance and good eating habits. They can facilitate the recruitment of new participants, motivate, promote friendships, influence lifestyle choices and provide a positive introduction to activities that encourage physical fitness.

Road to Coaching...
By: Ian Murray, Rocky Mountain Racers

I made the first step into coaching fall of 2012 with Rocky Mountain Racers based in Canmore / Calgary. I'd like to say a few words to athletes thinking of getting into coaching and my experience thus far regarding the intro NCCP courses.

After being an athlete for many years, and cross country skiing being one of my biggest passions, it has been natural for me to transition into coaching.  There is always the debate whether you go for the high paying work, having less time to enjoy your passion but really enjoying those few days you do vs. living your passion and sharing it with others and finding a way to make it work financially.  Having lived that other life, being an engineer in the fiberoptic industry in boom days of the early 2000's and having seen a lot of different things I have to say that the opportunity to work with keen, focused, individuals in sport has been very rewarding.  For now, while the opportunities are there, I`m going to stick with coaching athletes.

Volunteer Corner - Dan Brisbin, SK

What is the most rewarding part about volunteering?

I take great satisfaction in leading and working with people who share a common goal. As an official, this would be helping run races that give the athletes a great race experience - good tracks and a fair competition. At the club level, it is working with colleagues who are trying to develop better ski trails and facilities for cross country skiers in Saskatoon and area. With CCS, it's working with local organizing committees, club coaches and our high performance committee to give our Saskatchewan athletes a passion for cross country skiing and a better training and competition experience.

Quote of the Month

"It is very exciting to join a program with a talented pool of athletes, a fantastic wax team, an established sport science program and experienced administrative staff already in place. This is already a professionally-run program, but this sport is changing before our eyes where you need the speed of a sprinter along with the endurance of a traditional distance skier. Our main challenge in training will be to keep up with the demands of our sport and develop a team that can find the balance required to win at all levels."
