It was winter like conditions as the 2013 Winsport Frozen Thunder classic sprint, presented by Buff, got underway at the Canmore Nordic Centre on October 24th, 2013. This is the first on-snow race in the world this year, thanks to the Canmore Nordic Centre's annual snow preservation project, Frozen Thunder.

The races were won by Austrian Katerina Smutna and American Dakota Blackhorse.
Canada's Alysson Marshall was the top female of the day in 5th, and Patrick Stewart-Jones was the fastest Canadian man in 4th.

The NST Chronicles - By Ivan Babikov

Good to have Lenny back on training camp with us!
Photo: Ivan Babikov

Summertime went by very fast, and in few days I'll start skiing again, in Canmore, on Frozen Thunder. for the last few years, Canmore Nordic Center was able to provide us with some good skiing, on stored since last winter snow, starting as early as mid-October.

So, as you can imagine, I'm pretty excited to go back to Canmore and get on snow even though for the last sixteen days, our team spent time training in sunny California. The main focus was to get away from potentially rainy/cold October and get some good altitude training. For most of the camp, we were training in Truckee, but going down low to Nevada City for a couple intensities and strength sessions.

Quote of the Month Eric De Nys 2013-14

"The purpose of the camp is to get the best women in the country together. First, we want to have some fun together, embark on training together and, for the seven young athletes, provide some education around psychology, physiology and nutrition - things we want to work with the ladies on for the next quadrennial and get them to the next Olympics.

This is absolutely critical. It's an important window in their career. If we miss the development window, we've missed it, so in four years from now, it's too late."
