Colin Abbott - Cristian KuntzThe Athlete Community Elects Colin Abbott as the New CCC Athlete Director

Elections for a new Cross Country Canada Athlete Director took place on March 25th in Whistler, BC at the annual Athlete Meeting held during the 2013 Haywood Ski Nationals. We are pleased to announce that the athlete community has elected Colin Abbott. Colin started skiing in Jackrabbits and raced throughout high school with the Yukon Ski Team. After graduating, he moved to Ottawa to attend Carleton University and continue racing, this time with XCOttawa and Carleton. In 2011 Colin decided to train full time for skiing and moved to Whistler to join the Callaghan Valley Training Centre. After a year with CVTC he joined four other Yukoners to form the Yukon Elite Squad in Whitehorse where he continues to train and race.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Greg Kilroy, who represented the athlete community as the CCC Athlete Director from 2011-2013. Greg is stepping down as he is returning to university life and many of the meetings he needs to attend as the Athlete Director would conflict with his exams. Greg will continue to be an active member of the racing community.

Rolling out the Competition-Development NCCP context
CCC Logo

Cross Country Canada (CCC) is pleased to announce that we will host a first CCD dryland workshop in Canmore, May 8-12, 2013 (5 very full days!). The On Snow workshop (4 days) is planned for November 2013.

Given the large number of currently trained CCI-Advanced (T2T) coaches wanting to start their training in the CCD context, registrations for this first dryland workshop next spring will likely be offered to targeted 2015 Canada Winter Games(CWG) candidates in priority. It will be up to divisions to provide a list of prioritized coaches in that regard.

To be accepted for the CCD dryland workshop in May 2013, all candidates must be at least trained in the CCI-Advanced(T2T) context (both workshops completed) and be in the process of completing the CCI-Advanced(T2T) evaluation process (at least three out of five outcomes evaluated, including "supporting T2T athletes at a competition").

SIRC logoIncreased interaction at all levels: a strategy for keeping talented women in coaching

Credit: SIRC

It is well documented that the isolation of leaders is the number one barrier to retaining women as high performance coaches. This is true for all coaches, regardless of gender, but particularly for women because there is no critical mass of female coaches anywhere in the system. Opportunities for mentorship, transfer of knowledge, and the sharing of experiences are essential to keeping talented women in the coaching ranks.

Since becoming involved with CAC's Women in Coaching (WiC) program, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the powerful effect of networking opportunities. Initiatives such as the annual Women in Coaching National Coach Workshop provides the opportunity for women in national team coaching positions to come together once a year to experience professional development and peer-to-peer learning.

A Midnight Noon... By: Mark Arendz, Para-Nordic National Ski Team Athlete

 Mark Arendz - Nationals 2013

It's going to be a rough week when you want to be awake at midnight and asleep while the sun is out. The first few days in Whistler were not pretty. We all were tired just from the long travel day then you mix in 11 hours of time change, the result makes for restless nights and long days. By 9PM I could not stay awake anymore, so I went to bed. The first few nights I would wake up around midnight and then 2AM and the rest of the night was a periodic cycle of waking and sleep. On the third night I was so tired of trying to get back to sleep I just gave up and got up. Balance, especially on the skis, was terrible. The first day on skis I made Bambi look graceful. The nicest part of being in Whistler was the fact the snow was fast (er), or at least faster than the last days in Sochi. Which was a wonderful feeling, I felt like a decent skier again.

Masters World Champs Asiago 20132013 Masters World Cup in Asiago, Italy

Credit: Jean Bristow and Dave Rees

Asiago, Italy - home of Rode Wax, world-famous cheese and the 2013 Masters World Cup! Between February 15th and 22nd, 103 Canadians were among the 1,173 skiers from 25 nations who competed in the annual event which is open to athletes aged 30 and older. Skiers race in 5 year age categories - in 2013 the oldest woman was 86 and the oldest man 89. (In 2011 when the Masters World Cup was hosted by Sovereign Lake Nordic Club in B.C., the oldest competitor was a 93 year old American man). Competitors can choose to race classic or freestyle in each distance, which varies from 5 km to 45 km, depending on age and sex.

Canadians did well in podium results, winning 6 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze medals. This was one of the largest Masters World Cup Canadian teams for a European venue - usually the number is between 30 and 50 when the competition is held in Europe. Included in this year's team was Pierre Harvey, who finished 4th in the Men's 45 km classic race. Complete race results can be found at www.mwc2013.com
