Canada's "Alex the Great" Wins Historic Bronze Medal at Nordic World Ski Championships
Alex Harvey scripted another chapter for the history books when he became the first Canadian male to win an individual medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships. The 24-year-old Harvey took on the biggest names in the sport to win the bronze medal in the classic-ski sprint race at the opening day of the premiere event on the international cross-country ski calendar.
"This is absolutely huge. I am so thrilled," beamed the 24-year-old Nordic phenom. "The day started a little tricky with me qualifying 26th, but the skis sped up as the day went along, and I felt absolutely great in the final. This is huge for our program, and I hope the team can build a lot of confidence from this for the rest of the Championships."

Devon Kershaw and Alex Harvey a Booth Length Short of Podium in Team Sprint

The Canadian duo, who took the start line as the reigning World Champions in the race discipline, advanced to the finals with the 10 best Nordic teams in the world after winning their semifinal heat. They were well positioned at the front of the pack until the mid-way point of the race when Kershaw broke a pole in the transition area before while heading out on his second loop. The setback dropped the Canucks into ninth place.
The two-time Olympian, Kershaw, positioned the Canadians into fifth spot in this final lap, setting Harvey up for a shot at the podium. Hanging behind the leaders, Harvey made his move up the final punishing climb where he pushed the pace on the Val di Fiemme course, which was blanketed with more than 30 centimetres of snow overnight. Flying into the stadium, Harvey powered his way down the finishing stretch where he narrowly missed the podium in a photo finish with the Kazakhstan team.

Brian McKeever and Erik Carleton Crowned Sprint World Champions at IPC World Championships in Sweden

Brian Mckeever and Erik Carleton got the 2013 IPC World Championships off to a perfect start, winning the men's visually impaired classic sprint race on Monday in Solleftea, Sweden.
The 33-year-old McKeever and his guide Erik Carleton, both of Canmore, Alta., battled through difficult conditions, while taking advantage of some luck, to lock up the first World Championship title for the Canucks this year.
"It was a good ski today by Brian and we capitalized on a fall from the Swedish athlete in the final to grab the victory," said Robin McKeever, head coach, Canadian Para-Nordic Ski Team. "Today was all about waxing, and our techs were amazing as the conditions changed rapidly."

Chandra Crawford Calls End to Competitive Cross-Country Ski Season
 Photo: Todd Korol/Reuters
The leader of the Canadian women's cross-country ski squad, Chandra Crawford, has decided to take a break from competitive high-performance skiing to recharge her batteries for the final charge to the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014.
Physically and mentally exhausted from pushing herself hard in training and life, the 29 year old will take the remainder of the season off to give her body the rest it requires.
"My motivation and love of competing at the highest level in cross-country skiing has made so many dreams come true for me, but it can also cause me to go overboard," said Crawford. "As Kenny Rogers said 'You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away, know when to run.

A coach's experience....Lisa Patterson on her role leading the 2013 WJ and U23 Champs Teams in Liberec, CZE
Credit: Diana Deakin-Thomas, CCC Women's Committee
I caught up with Lisa during the Eastern Championships at Nakkertok in early February. Back from Europe just 2 days from leading the World Junior and U23 Championship teams in Liberec, CZE, Lisa was (although a tad tired) pumped about the experience.
As the first woman in this role, Lisa was honoured to have been appointed as the leader of our Canadian 2013 teams.
She felt fortunate to have such a great group of athletes, many of whom were new to international travel and racing at this level. The team dynamics were unparalleled.

2012 Ski to School Scholarship Recipient: Alannah MacLean
Congratulations to Alannah MacLean, the winner of the 2012 Ski to School Scholarship. Alannah is a member of the Walden Cross Country Fitness Club. In 2011, Alannah made the decision to attend the National Development Centre in Thunder Bay, ON with the sole condition of being able to attend Lakehead University as a full-time student. She is truly an ambassador for student-athletes across Canada that wish to pursue the duality of skiing at a high level and earning a degree in the process.
Alannah has been a cross-country skier for the past 18 years of her life, a racer for 7 years and a competitive ski racer for 4 years. She places a great amount of importance on being balanced in both school and skiing as she pursues excellence in both. Congratulations Alannah and good luck with your 2012/2013 ski season and academic year!

Quote of the Month
"There was a lot of action in the wax room and communication on the course today for sure...These guys we have are the best in the business and should take a lot of pride in that medal today. It was a great team effort, and Alex showed all you need is one in the heats and anything can happen."

Did You Know...
...That the entire Canadian World Cup Team have made it into the FIS Red Group for World Cup period 3? The Red Group consists of the 30 best men and the 30 best women in the current Distance and Sprint World Cup Rankings Lists. This is a historic achievement in that no previous Canadian team has had this many athletes in the Red Group before. This has been a goal for the World Cup Team for the last couple of years.
