iPad Video Analysis Apps

Video analysis has always been a great tool to provide technique feedback to athletes. And feedback received sooner, rather than later, is more effective. Now with iPads and iPhones, video can be taken directly on the iPad and uploaded easily to a number of Video Analysis Apps for instant feedback. Newer iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch can record at 30 frames per second which is ideal for technique analysis. And now technology allows for video that is of High Definition (HD) quality.
We've used several iPad apps and reviewed the ones we feel provide good features. Full article |

Ideas for On-Snow Training Camps for T2T Athletes
Educating Athletes on Using Cue/Key Words or Phrases for Race Preparation
Sometimes young athletes have difficulty understanding how to use cue or key words as part of their race preparation. Cue words help an athlete to maintain focus, take their mind off the physical discomfort of racing, or keep their technique together during a race.
I have used two approaches to introduce the concept of Cue Words to young athletes. Introducing Cue Phrases during a Pre-Ski and using an Elevation Race Profile to Introduce the concept of Cue Words and Phrases.

Splits - iPad apps to help you out!
Calculating splits on the side of the trail with paper and pencil is now a skill or art that coaches may not require. Many coaches now use an iPad or iPhone for keeping in touch with athletes, video analysis and many other things. With the two apps listed below you can also take splits to a new level with easy to use interfaces and sharing options with other coaches and parents. Just make sure the battery on your electronic device is charged up, otherwise, have a paper and pencil handy.

Both apps also have excellent websites with video and written tutorials to help you learn the different functions. We have included some very brief notes on some of the features and our personal views after using the apps over the last few years. Please head over to the websites for a more detailed review of the features and video tutorials...read more

Race Preparation Routines
By: A Training Centre Athlete and former National Aggregate Champion for their age category
Race Morning Preparation
My general rule is too get up at least three hours before the race starts if I have an early race start time so I can shake off any sleepiness. Giving yourself a lot of time before a race also means you can get all of your race stuff ready without having any stress of running behind in your morning preparation. If I have a race later in the day I try to wake up at a normal time that I am used to. I don't recommend sleeping all morning before the race unless that is something that you are used to doing. If you do race later in the day it is sometimes good to do some light activity in the morning to get your body moving to avoid arriving at the race in that tired and lazy mode...read more |
Talent Identification
The process of detecting, identifying, and selecting talent is an enormous and difficult challenge that has long been discussed by National Sport Organizations, coaches and sport science experts, among others. Currently, the majority of organizations have talent identification or talent emergence programs in place, with all of them having similar fundamental characteristics varying by sport. The challenges are that skills and aptitudes shown at a young age do not automatically translate into performance, talent is not always apparent by observation alone and that 'chance' can be a big factor in identifying athletes with the best potential for success.
Quick Tips
On-snow strength and technique work
- Legs only skating is an excellent drill and workout for any athlete, especially in the early season when you are working on transfering all the rollerskiing to on-snow technique
- Helps develop an equal push with both legs, works on a forward body position and develops the strength needed to go fast during the racing season
- Try starting out with short sections of 2-3min legs only with 2-3min of double poling, repeat 3-5x. Depending on the stage of the athletes aim for 10-15min sections of each.
- Always think about technique and 'feel' during these workouts.
