Trail to Sochi Starts in Canmore: Cross Country Canada announces National Ski Teams for 2013 Season

The trail to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games for Canada's newly named World Cup Nordic teams will start at the Canmore Nordic Centre, thanks to Frozen Thunder.

The innovative stock piling of snow project at the Nordic Centre, which was originally piloted in 2009, provides the nation's cross-country skiing and biathletes with early season on-snow training on more than two-kilometres of solid skiable terrain. The project will now host its first major sprint race for more than 100 Nordic athletes from Canada and the United States. The inaugural WinSport Frozen Thunder Classic, presented by Buff, will be held on October 26. Qualifying will start at 9 a.m. with the head-to-head heats starting at 10 a.m.

Sprint Qc logo

From December 6-9, winter will be on our doorstep and downtown Québec City will be dressed in its finest white for the Sprint Québec which will host the FIS Cross-Country World Cup. For the very first time in Québec City, the top cross-country skiers, among others the Canadian favorites Alex Harvey and Devon Kershaw, will be in town to tackle an 850 m track looping around Québec's National Assembly.

It will be the first Cross-Country World Cup to be held in the heart of a city anywhere in the Americas, with thousands of fans gathering for the event! The atmosphere will have a distinctly urban feel as the team and individual sprint finals showcase the elite skiers at this third FIS World Cup of the 2012-2013 season.

Volcanoes, Glaciers and Rollerskis: 2012Justin Wadsworth Headshot 2012 Training Season Update with Coach Wadsworth

Justin Wadsworth is the Head Coach of the National Ski Team.

It's funny. The athletes came into this training season more excited than ever, when one would think that after such a successful last season it would have been just the opposite. The amount of work this team has done over the last two years has been exhausting and I thought maybe people would slow down a bit and need to be encouraged back into training mode. Well, that couldn't be further from the case.

...

Our team is in a better place than ever and it's an exciting time for everyone involved in cross country skiing in Canada. Without the support of our CCC members, fans and partners we would not be where we are today. Thank you!

Beckie Scott Inducted Into Olympic Hall of Fame

Beckie Gold MedalOlympic legends join the exclusive group of individuals inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame at the Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony at the Air Canada Centre.

"The medals are in a drawer, the skis went to a museum, and what I cherish the most from nearly two decades of sport are the friendships: the old friends, the new friends, the best friend who became my husband, and remains a best friend," Scott said. "The adventures, the laughs, the tears, the celebrations and the struggles - moments that were memorable and meaningful because of the people I was with."

What do we do at a retreat for the training centre girls organised by Cross Country Canada's Womens committee? We don't ONLY sing and dance around in our pajamas and we certainly don't complain about men. At all. I mean it. We trained hard, had a lot of fun, and worked on building a world leading women's cross country skiing program. More specifically, Pavlina Suldrich, coach of the Ontario Ski Team, Dr. Sharleen Hoar, performance psychologist of the National Team, the NDTC Thunder Bay girls and the CNEPH girls got together last week-end in a house in Mont Saint-Anne.

"Now you are starting to look like a skier!", says Para-Nordic National Team Head Coach Robin McKeever  as he watches me haul my body up the last portion of Highlander Trail - a 1.5K beginners' loop I treaded over a hundred times since my arrival.

It is day 15 of an 18 day training camp. There was no need to ask what I could possibly have looked like in the first two weeks, the answer comes quickly enough: some kind of tourist "shuffling on skis" Robin tells me. I laugh. A glance at my wrist confirms that I must, indeed, be doing something different. My heart rate is hitting the roof while my legs are screaming for me to stop this nonsense.

SIRC logoThank You to our Volunteers!

Volunteerism is considered the backbone of Canada's sport and recreation system. Currently, Canada has over 6.5 million volunteers with 35% of those being involved in sport. Sport volunteers encompass people from all walks of life, from active and retired athletes, coaches and officials to professionals, parents and youth (and more) who want to help out in their community. Volunteers are the key to making sport possible for the physical, social and emotional development of children and adults, so it's important that we recognize and value their contributions to the sport community.
