Looking for a late spring or early summer flowering perennial with a 110% WOW factor? Paeonia suffruticosa, commonly called tree peony, delivers with amazing flowers that are beautiful and fragrant!
Native to China, the Chinese have adored and collected this symbolic plant for centuries. Their desirable beauty caught on to others, including the Japanese, who did extensive breeding with tree peonies. Today, tree peonies are enjoyed in gardens across the United States.
Planting pointers: A little extra attention to the soil will pay dividends for years to come with tree peonies. Amend the soil prior to planting with organic matter such as compost or composted manure. Check the pH of your soil before you plant; tree peonies prefer a neutral or slightly alkaline soil. And once you plant it - leave it be. Avoid: wet spots, poorly drained areas or planting next to a sprinkler head - disastrous for tree peonies! Also, plant a distance away from large trees or shrubs; their roots will rob needed nutrients and moisture.
Bright, sunny locations that offer a respite from the intense afternoon sun are best. Too much shade will produce weak and sparse flowering. Too much sun will cause blooms to fade and pass quickly. Fertilize now (when the plant begins to grow). Use Plant-tone; read and follow label directions for application rate. A word or two about watering: water thoroughly after planting. During the growing season, supply an inch of water each week if rainfall has been lacking, especially for the first few years after planting. Doing so will encourage a deep, healthy root system. Be careful not to overwater! Slow growing, tree peonies can live for decades when properly planted and cared for.
Don't confuse the tree peony with the garden peony. The tree peony does not die back to the ground like garden peonies. Their tree-like branches remain even in the winter landscape. And unlike garden peonies that are cut back in late fall, little if any pruning is ever needed on tree peonies. Leave the pruners in the shed!

It's the latest craze, but we've been lovin' them for years at Martin Viette! Sinful, sexy succulents are 'must-haves' for easy living, easy enjoyment; and a new shipment of pre-planted succulent planters has just arrived. All the planting has been done; all you have to do is enjoy it!
We think of these planters as instant centerpieces for outdoor dining or accent tables, on the deck, terrace or by the pool. Keep it simple with easy-to-follow rules for growing succulents - provide full sun and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering and/or wet soils is a sure death sentence for succulents. Fertilize sparingly; succulents are not heavy feeders.
You'll love this about our new succulent planters - they're on sale through April 30th. BTW - Perfect for Mother's Day - hint, hint.

As the horticultural saying goes. . .when forsythia is in full bloom, it's time to apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control to the lawn. So, if forsythia is screaming with yellow flowers in your neck of the woods, apply a pre-emergent control now. (Be prepared to make a second application later this spring.)
It's so much easier to control crabgrass with a pre-emergent material. If you're seeding any bare spots in the lawn, make sure that you use a product that can be applied in conjunction with seeding. Not sure? Ask us.
A word to the wise: Once crabgrass germinates and takes over, post-emergent materials can be used but they are not as effective and can discolor certain grass types. Plus, crabgrass sticks out like a sore thumb - its color, texture, and habit is completely contrary to our typical home lawn grasses.
If you're using a pre-emergent crabgrass control, always read the entire label and follow all directions to a tee. Here's some good advice regarding pesticide labels - read the label first, then apply.

Many of you have called or visited Martin Viette asking about a mystery yellow-flowering plant blooming along many roadsides and areas of the North Shore. A major word of caution - Ranunculus ficaria is NO friend in the garden!!! A member of the buttercup family, this invasive weed will quickly take over as massive green carpets during spring. Plants disappear during the summer months, leaving pernicious tubers and bulbets underground. Do NOT hand pull or dig out this weed! The careful use of a non-selective herbicide can be applied according to label directions. Ranunculus ficaria resembles the marsh marigold, Caltha palustris, a non-invasive plant that grows in wetland areas. Be certain of the identification before you treat.
