Phlox subulata, commonly known as moss phlox, dazzles with that first shot of early spring color! Easy to care for, easy to love, Phlox likes full sun and well-drained soil locations. Provide adequate moisture to establish new plantings. Always avoid heavy, wet soils. Phlox does show some drought tolerance once established. All are hardy (zones 3-8; we are considered zone 7), low growing spreaders with evergreen needle-like foliage. And if you garden in deer country, Phlox subulata is reported to be deer resistant.
Thankfully, there are many varieties to choose from, each sporting colorful flowers. Take your pick! And if you can't decide on just one, all varieties of Phlox subulata play well together in the garden. Here are some of our favorites for dependable bursts of spring color!
Phlox subulata 'Emerald Blue': lavender-blue star-shaped flowers.
Phlox subulata 'Emerald Pink': bright pink flowers.
Phlox subulata 'Scarlet Flame': bright scarlet flowers.
Phlox subulata 'Snowflakes': pure white flowers.
Phlox subulata'Candy Stripe': white flowers with a pink center stripe.
Phlox subulata 'Fort Hill': pinkish-rose colored flowers.
Uses: as a groundcover in the border, along walkways as edgings, spilling over walls, or in rock gardens. Moss phlox are low-growers, so place in the foreground so they can be seen and enjoyed.
